Here’s the latest fun thing going on with the Home Companion Workshop—— if you sign up before December 1st, you will be eligible, along with everyone else who has already signed up, to win a very rare, complete set of Home Companion magazines in a set of hand-painted (by me!) magazine storage boxes! Here are a couple of photos of storage boxes I’ve already painted so you can get an idea of what you’re in for. I’ve signed all the issues as well, for good measure.
I also want to show you a wall in my studio at home where I hang some of my most prized possessions, including 3 FABULOUS Linda Solovic pieces.

Linda will be one of the instructors at the Workshop and if you can still get in to one of her classes, I highly recommend it! She has an eye for detail, color and design that I just can’t get enough of.

I can’t wait to try one of her projects. Linda and I often run into each other at flea markets, where I’m buying some useless item that I’m going to have to find room for on some already-jammed tabletop, while Linda is buying teeny, tiny things— buttons, charms, plastic doll heads, rubber animals, scraps of ribbons— that she then incorporates into her beautiful, patterned works of art, that I and tons of other people can’t wait to get our hands on!

So sign up now, maybe win an entire set of MEHC mags (where, in one of them, you can see Linda’s whole house and studio!) and get to take Linda’s classes and learn how a master does it.

Oh my. This is some beautiful work. Love the intricate dance of all the ephemera and embellishments. Hoping to still swing the workshop. We shall see. Fingers crossed, though.

If your workshop were on the west coast I would try to find a way to go. I will have to keep peeking at your blog for glimpses of the projects. I’m sure it will be lots of fun. I’m going to have to go through my magazines and see if I can find the article about Linda Solovic. I have seen her collages before and thought they were wonderful!

I’m happy that I have already signed up, and I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed for a brand new set of magazines-signed ones at that! I haven’t been able to part with a single one of mine, but they have taken a beating with all of my moves!
Can’t wait for the workshop!!!

I would love the set of magazines. I held on to most of mine, save for the early years that got lost in a move [sigh]. As for the workshop, I can’t do it this year, but I’m looking forward to next year!

I already feel SO very lucky just to be signed up for Linda’s class, but wouldn’t that just be over the top FABULOUS if I won your set of magazines, too? Yes, it most certainly would.

Oh my fingers are crossed and hoping to be the lucky winner. Now I’m doing research on Linda S.

I feel so silly. I was SO VERY sad at the loss of my favorite magazine. Then it occurred to me this morning (yes. just this morning.) that you are probably still doing stuff on the web. I am so happy to find you, ME! Keep inspiring all of us! (Even those NOT artistic. Much.)

Oh! I’m so excited to find you have a blog! I love everything you do–since the very first time I saw one of your cards–when was that? I don’t even know…before I was married (and that’s been a while!) You always inspire me. I love your love of vintage illustration and how it comes through in your work. I also love the Craftsman period, and I see that shining through what you do as well. Thanks for giving us such beautiful, charming & whimsical things to love. I’ll be back often to see what’s happening in your world!
P.S. Thanks for sharing Linda’s work–how marvellous!

I just love your “stuff”. I am an RN and I take your folders into work to use on my projects (Public Health)to give a splash of color to some heavy weigh subjects. I miss your magazine so much. Hope to see it again someday.

You totally brighten my day…Thank you for all the work you to keep ‘your following’ inspired. Oh! I have all of your issues, but one…the first one…Mary, you first caught my eye in the first Victoria magazine, which I treasure…I love Linda’s work and remember seeing it over the years…Blessings!

I have been a fan for as long as I can remember. I love your work and loved your magazine. I was heartsick when it no longer was published. I so wish I could be in the drawing for the giveaway!! How I would love to be able to go to your workshop, it would be a dream come true, sigh. Who ever is fortunate enough to win them, I’m sure they’ll treasure them. Can’t wait to see the review of the workshop!

I love all your ideas and have kept all my issues of ME and have done some of the projects from your seasonal book. A friend and I did the ice skates and then a friend who was visiting was so impressed with them that she did a pair too. Wish I could take the workshop.

Mary, I’m missing your magazine. It was my invitation to imagine time for my creative muses to come alive. I loved how your mag celebrated the artistic life. If I’m not mistaken, I have all your magazines, every one. I never cut or clipped from them. They are still by my bedside for quiet moments to dream. Anna K.

I would love to win your giveaway! I would also like to know any flea markets around the St. Louis area that you think are worth attending. It seems we don’t have as many flea markets as other cities. Thanks. I miss your magazine.

I would love to attend your workshops but live too far away. I would love to enter your give away for the magazines. I have been a fan of yours forever. You are the Queen of Everything and I wish I could draw and paint like you too. Thanks so much!
Comment by Ruth — October 12, 2009 @ 8:56 am
Would love to attend the workshop and win the mag collection! I kept all my issues for years then decided I needed to share the fun! I have donated my collection (minus the paper dolls!) to the shelter for battered women & children here. Maybe something interesting and distracting for them to do! It was not an easy decision! Your art inspires me! Love Linda’s hearts!
Comment by Rebecca — October 12, 2009 @ 2:32 pm
Love the hearts! I have finally been doing some pieces of my own…glad to be back in the saddle! Your work and old issues always inspire.

I love just ME items so much that I am in the process of starting to redo my sewing/craft room in the ME decor.
I truly miss the Mary Engelbreit Home Companion magazine!
Thank you for all the inspiration – thru your website and magazine – that you’ve given me.

I have bought many Magazines of Home Companion through the years. Also a calander for years. I am starting to set up a new sewing room and would like to use a lot of Mary’s art work. I am 73 and just really getting started in Quilting. Just finished 2 Quilts that have 5 blocks of my mothers hand embroidery. They turned out perfect.

A set of signed magazines from Mary Engelbreit? That would be tops. I have had to share lots of ME magazines with my mother and to have a bunch of my own would be fabulous! I miss the ME magazine more than anything. To find out it wasn’t going to be published anymore was a sad day for me.

Exciting contest! I’m hoping!
Comment by Genie Cowden — November 11, 2009 @ 11:35 pm
Thank you, Mary for featuring your studio and studios of other artists in your magazines. Seeing the actual places where artists actually create their art and hearing what they have to say in the interviews makes development of my own studio seem closer to reality. I have been so inspired by your magazine and books, particularly those about the creation of art. There is no one else who has filled that need! Please continue finding ways to help us hopeful “artists” visualize ways to fulfill our dreams.
I did not find your website in time to enter your contest. Do you have the magazine storage boxes for sale? I’d love have some to put my own copies of your magazines in.
