Well, goodbye and good riddance to THAT decade. The past ten years have been difficult to say the least, with a few bright spots thrown in– like Mikayla coming into our lives and some truly great times with friends. But now with the start of a brand new decade I’m completely psyched to jump in, shake things up and start anew! While I’m happy to have my things available in places like Michaels and Target and a few other big box stores, what I really want is to get back into the independent gift market (my first love!) where I believe they truly understand and appreciate my art. I want to draw what YOU, my customers, want and what I want– just like I did at the very beginning of my career. I finally realize, after 35 years in this business, that I actually know what’s best when it comes to my designs, and I don’t need 23-year-old buyers (no offense, 23-year-old buyers) or focus groups (go ahead and be offended, focus groups) to tell me what I should be doing. Don’t get me wrong; I’m always open to advice and collaboration and outside ideas, but at this point I really feel like I understand what works and what doesn’t. And I don’t mean just going back and repeating the same old themes that were successful in the past. I’ll always love Scotties, cherries, and our “fried-egg-flowers,” (or FEFs as we call them here) and I’m sure I’ll still use them from time to time, but I really believe that it’s time to see what else I can come up with that people might want to see. And while I’ve got you here, let me ask you what would you like to see that is not available to you now? What kind of products are you interested in and where do you shop for those products? I’d like to see my things in a lot more catalogs and independent gift stores and specialty stores– what do you think? We’d LOVE to hear what you’re thinking and wishing (as long as you don’t wish for the magazine to come back– we’ve already discussed this, ladies.) Any constructive comments are welcome and believe me, we are all ears here at the studio. So go wild.

So, bring on the 20tens! We’re excited to get out there and make the world a cuter place!
~Mary

Let me be the first to say how much I have loved your joyous artwork from the first that I saw the checkerboard borders and the quotes about tea and friends.
One product I would like to have more available is paper napkins with seasonal charm, beverage and luncheon sized. I’m always looking for them for the groups I have in.
I do miss the magazine but I understand you can only go so many directions at once.

Hello Mary,
Congratulations! I really think it’s the right move…evolution…
I personally love the gift industry as a whole. Why?
For many reasons…it’s all about communication, isn’t it?
And in your case, when you draw you communicate.
Best to you from a huge fan from Toronto, Canada.

My mother and I always love your magazine. We love your designs and your interest in other artists.
I happen to be a rug hooker and would love to see some of your designs as patterns for rug hookers. Some hookers like preprinted patterns. I would be happy with paper patterns that could be traced onto a backing of one’s choice. It would be a great addition to one’s home decor.

Mary,
Your artwork looks great anywhere. I did enjoy finding it in gift shops. I liked “gift-ables” that made me smile. That is why we give gifts–to see a smile!

Does that possibly mean a magazine?
You are sucha tallented lady and I just loved your magazine.
Happy 2010, wishing you much success!

Mary…
I am a 47 year old woman (yikes! When did that happen??)… I lived in Chesterfield, MO, and loved going to the ME store to browse, drool, and shop… I have always loved your work, and especially your cards.. The beautiful matching envelopes were the perfect ‘touch’.. My favorites have been the lions, polar bears, and all the beautiful Santa’s with children during Christmas… I also used to get your wall calendars (sorry! I make my own now! Family photos), but I still get the desktop calendar…
My Christmas tree has ornaments from years past, and I have several tins and goodies – all part of my collection that get’s dragged out at Christmas.
I get my calendars at an independent bookstore, Betty’s Books, in Baker City, Oregon.. 17 miles from our ranch..
My hobby is scrapbooking, stamping and card making… so any goodies that you make for those crafts would be welcomed! And bring back the cards:)
Here’s to Twenty-Ten!!!!

Could you make cube calendars again? These were great for small places like my phone table.
As a cat-lover, I’d appreciate equal time for designs featuring cute cats.
Different media maybe – such as unpainted wood mosaic? Blown glass paperweights in vibrant colors?

Mary, trust your own instincts! Like you said, you are the expert….do what works for you and we will follow!!

I would love to see more of anything you do Mary! Just having it available in more places/stores/websites would be great! I recently decided to redecorate and brighten things up around my house and your style and pieces have been my inspiration! My biggest problem has been finding your pieces though! (thank goodness for ebay!) I love the new items you’ve done for Michaels (haven’t seen any at Target yet!), but would love to see more non-disposable items. Love the note pads and paper plates and such but I would like more pieces that I know I would have around for years! Maybe even a new tea pattern and wallpaper borders again! I would also like to see a link on your website to dealers/stores that are carrying your products! Thanks again for making such beautiful things and inspiring all of us! Can’t wait to see what you do next!
Comment by Jeanine — January 21, 2010 @ 10:03 pm
Welllllll, since the magazine is a moot point, I’d say MORE BOOKS!
I know people love ‘How To – Make & Do’ type books, and I personally love the home decor books {Especially when we get to see Mary’s Carousel of Houses*wink!}. Mary, you have always championed artful & creative living, and I think books that feature inspiration, ideas, and artisans will always be welcomed. Or what about a more ’serious’ book about starting/running/growing a business in a creative industry?
Comment by Deb Kennedy — January 21, 2010 @ 10:28 pm
Hi Miss Mary,
What I would LOVE to see more of are Totes and purses ,GOOD ONES, Hats too…look at . The type that are needle pointed with your wonderful designs, or ones that we can needle point or cross stitch.
Would love to see, Quality throws, pillows and quilts as well. You could make designs that Harmonize together. Like, for example The restless seas collection, all totes, pillows ,throws , quilts ect, would be done in this way for the 4 seasons of the year. The sea in spring, which would of course be released in spring, Summer Sea… you get the idea and each year you would come up with another type of new exciting collection wrapped around the seasons, but ever changing and always limited for that season and year. The next year could be Cozy Home Seasons, Or Remembering the worlds fairs through the seasons. I don’t know , maybe this doesn’t help, but It’s the thought that counts!…Oh and you could buy these at Target ..love that place!
Have fun gal,
enjoy yourself, go get em tiger
No one does Mary better then MARY!
Comment by Cindy — January 22, 2010 @ 12:31 am
For sure, another Christmas book! I am sitting here, this very moment (well, the moment before I got on-line) looking through all of your Christmas books that I borrowed from my sister (and went to Amazon to buy copies for myself!) and am SO in the Christmas spirit now…a month too late, but, oh well!
How about “beachy”…a “beachy” book?
New resin initials?
A new line of teapots? Man, I loved those!
Another “Companion” book with funky junk decor creations!
ok…I’ll stop!
Happy you are blogging!

Have you ever approached the greating card industry? I think your art and quotes would be a welcomed breath. The intimate and meaningfulness of your illustrations would be perfect for this forum of communication.

Oh, and actual Dolls of your much loved cut out doll charachers. I know you have these in some capacity or you have in the past. Little girls would love to dress up these sweet little “people”. Just some food for thought.

I have many other ideas. Please email me.
Comment by Liz de Sousa — January 22, 2010 @ 6:08 am
Vintage spice racks, what-not shelves and small cupboards were often included in pictures of rooms with the ME look. I loved the cuteness of such pieces and have looked for similar in antique stores/flea markets. Not much luck.
How about a line of small “furnishings” with the ME look and colors. If the designs were kept subtle, I could use my own collectibles with them.
Best wishes!
Comment by Jo Johnston — January 22, 2010 @ 6:39 am
I’d like to have you expand on the sewing theme…quilting theme, sewing room theme. With a little girl working away on a black Featherweight sewing machine. Totes and sewing room organizers.
Comment by Lynn S. — January 22, 2010 @ 7:37 am
Books, of course, but I’ve been needing help with home organization and classroom organization. I need to be happy in both places, and seeing your work makes me happy. I love to sew, so fabric is always on my mind. Art to frame, crafts to make, kid-inspired activities, home stuff…you do the dreaming and the making, I know your audience will love it!
Comment by Cheryl Jaeger — January 22, 2010 @ 7:45 am
Been loving your art for decades Mary – I would love to own a ME print, numbered and signed by you. And as a wanna be artist I also would love to peek inside your process, inspiration and brain. Any ‘how-to’ would be amazing.
I personally like odd-ball items – not really matchy-matchy – although I understand the need for “lines” of products – but unique, disconnected items are always the things I gravitate toward.
I love your whimsy and especially when you get soulful. You bring a Madeline L’Engle quality to spiritual things that is rarely found in shops and gift items. I don’t know if that makes any sense, but when you head in that direction (Hurt not the earth…, etc) I just love it.
Comment by HeidiRenee — January 22, 2010 @ 8:37 am
One more thing…
I’m not sure if you’re familiar with StoryPeople, (Brian Andreas) but they sell both to shops and directly too. Because some of us live on the edges of the world having access to your items directly instead of what our local shops carry would be amazing. It would allow you to do smaller runs, unique items and have a quick pulse on what your fans are looking for.
Comment by HeidiRenee — January 22, 2010 @ 8:41 am
While I am excited to find ME products at Michael’s and Target, I am frequently disappointed with the quality of the merchandise. I would be delighted if you went back to higher end products. Your kids’ line at Dillards is delightful and I am so happy that your fabric is now made by Moda. I loved your arts & crafts designs and would LOVE to see some fabric based on them. And since you already have a foot in the door at Dillards, maybe you could expand your presence there with some home items (dishes, linens, decorative accessories)? And while I too love the “breit” look of Scotties, cherries and FEFs, the colors and design of your blog header are gorgeous! I could see that on bed linens or dishes and think it would appeal to more than the “checks and cherries” crowd.
Comment by Pam — January 22, 2010 @ 9:10 am
You know what I’ve liked best about your art, Mary? I love the “homey-ness” of your pictures. Big, plump colorful chairs in warm, cheery rooms with windowsills and knick-knacks and all those wonderful things that make a home a home. I frequently try to channel you when I rearrange and decorate a room. I love your “Night Before Christmas” book — the beds looks so wonderfully comfortable and it just makes me feel safe and happy to look at a home like that. So maybe more illustrated books? More cards? Really more of anything you do is great!
Comment by Jeanne — January 22, 2010 @ 11:39 am
Amen, Mary! Trusting your personal genius and intuition is what’s made you special. Sticking to your basic beliefs about life and messages of emotional connection to women is what keeps you on the top. The independent gift stores and specialty shops put you over the top, the Mom and Pop stores who stocked your card. So I say stick with that basic premise in everything you do and the results will be personally rewarding again.
Best!
Jean

One more thing I want to say, Mary: Mary Engelbreit is so much more than a magazine. Don’t misunderstand: We all miss it dearly! I’ve kept every single issue I received. I keep Cottage Living to cut out pictures with my daughter for scrapbooks, but a pair of scissors is not allowed anywhere NEAR your magazine! However, even though the magazine is gone, your art is not. Your creations and all that your wonderful staff has done with those creations, really have cheered up little pockets of the world. That may sound silly and syrupy, but honestly, when I see your stuff in a store, it brightens my day and makes me smile. I think God has given you an incredible talent for bringing some happiness and beauty and goodness into the world. And that can be done in many different ways — I have no doubt that your talented staff will find those new ways to spread the Mary Engelbreit cheeriness! We eagerly anticipate what is next!
Comment by Jeanne — January 22, 2010 @ 12:03 pm
Well, if the magazine can’t come back, how about a book? Something with home decorating vignettes, simple projects, lots of quilts. Maybe even just a quilt book, with all of the projects made from your fabrics, with beautiful, cozy home photography like you had in Home Companion. Inspiration!
Comment by Tammy — January 22, 2010 @ 12:13 pm
Okay – thought of a few more items! Like Pam, I would love to see more dishes, linens, and decorative accessories. I would also love to find shower/bath pieces. What about the rub-on wall decals that are popular now? I would love to have some wonderful sayings to add to my walls that had that “Mary touch” to them with your quotes, fonts, and art. Just more “ME” items of any kind will be appreciated by your fans!
Comment by Jeanine — January 22, 2010 @ 12:17 pm
I agree with Pam. It seem the products that I find are sub-quality…when I look at my older ME things, the quality is so much better!!! I was so happy to read your blog…back to the times where products, books and home decor were true to ME colors and themes. I would like to see more papers frames, paper boxes, MORE HOME DECOR!! Also more fun ME books that are really representative of ME…i.e. Home Companion books.(no offense but I love my ME magazines that have ME art on the front and was disappointed when that changed…don’t get me wrong though, love all of them. Didn’t understand that change) I love my enamel boxes…the specialty items!! Can’t wait for the changes to come and where we can actually BUY your beautiful happy creations!!!! I love everything about ME!! I also can’t WAIT for the upcoming Home Companion seminars!!!!! Thank you for being you!

Years ago I saw an ME kitchen clock while visiting my parents out of state. Should have bought it there! When we got home I tried to find it and even put a shop owner on its trail, but no luck. I would love to replace my 22 year old kitchen wall clock with a new ME clock.
Comment by marie — January 22, 2010 @ 1:25 pm
This may seem silly, but, I am too busy to have time for crafts, etc. I am more the kinda person (who when is looking for something out of the ordidnary) I can run and buy it – if for myself or for a gift. Anyway “craftiness” is not for every body. I’m am personally interested in “unique, different, special little things” that I can run and buy – but I like good quality. Sometimes I end up at Hallmark – but that is not exactly what I have in mind. More a less a mixture of ME, antique, and period things. Old mixed with new. Thanks, P>S> I TRULY miss the magazine – nothing more relalxing than a warm cup of tea or coffee on a cold night by the fireplace with your magazine. ENOUGH!!!
Comment by Pat Duncan — January 22, 2010 @ 1:59 pm
I completely agree with the previous poster that suggested more sewing items. I LOVE anything to do with sewing, and am now teaching my 5 year old to sew. Sewing notions with M.E. touches would be fabulous. I love all your pincushions and own several of them. But I would love scissors, measuring tapes, pins with decorate heads like flowers, spools, etc.
I also really, really loved when you had the line of home dec. stuff that was more “Arts and Crafts”. It was a beautiful collection.
Oh…and Pretty Please!! I would love to be able to purchase embroidery designs for my embroidery machine. I know you used to have them available for Bernina machines. I have a Janome machine and would love to be able to do your embroideries on my machine.
Thank you for asking! I love it all!
Comment by Sivje Parish — January 22, 2010 @ 2:08 pm
I would like to see some bedroom/bathroom accessories – shower curtains, rugs, comforters, window coverings, little accessories.
And while I like the traditional ME elements, I really liked the Arts & Crafts/Prairie style items you did a few years ago. I’d love to see some more of that type of vintage elements
…I haven’t seen your items at Target … I better go look!
Comment by kkmack — January 22, 2010 @ 2:42 pm
I would like to see more how to books of your decorating themes, and quilt fabric your pictures are so comforting they are perfect for quilts.

Dear Mary,
Loved you then, love you now… loved working for you at your Tyson’s store!!
I am living year-round in SW Florida and would love to see more sea side/beach themed items. Also, if you do figurines I would love to see porcelain/ceramic instead of resin. Last but not least, I have a large collection of your sterling charms and would love to see more of those… beach themed charms “ME-style” would be wonderful!!
Best for you future!!

Mary,
thank you for asking for our comments. I really loved your art deco work you were doing a few years ago – and would love to see more of it. I also would like to see more home decor items like bookends, etc.
Thank you,
April

Yes-Yes-Yes!! I have truely missed the ‘good old days’ when I could find a huge variety of your products at boutiques and gift stores! I especially loved my chef cookie jar, who I am sad to say, got his head broken a few years ago and as much as I’ve searched have not been able to find him anywhere again to replace him! I also love all the cherry designs and miss them so! Especially the kitchen products.
I also miss the way your Home Companion used to be laid out years ago before all the advertisements took up half the magazine! In fact I stopped my subscription long ago because of that fact – it was so disappointing to have every other page a sales pitch page!
So I say ‘bring it on…’ – the old days of Mary E!!!! Wonderful news and all the best of luck to you!
Comment by Valerie — January 22, 2010 @ 4:03 pm
p.s. how could I forget – I love-love-love all the cross-stitch designs too!! And other craft projects – we need more-more and did I say more?!!

I just love your artwork because it is always in the positive, even when scolding, it is scolding to be more positive
Thanks…it is so uplifing.
Comment by Barb Henderson — January 22, 2010 @ 4:05 pm
I have always adored your books. I do hope you are planning more in the future. I have seen a few of your items at Michaels but not at Target.
Take charge of your designs again. (forget the focus groups… YOU are the Artist!) Go with your heart. And may I suggest that ME finds a manufacturer in the USA for your products…. please! Let’s not keep someone else’s country busy with work. They certainly don’t do the same for us. Blessings as you move forward.

I would love to see some vinyl wall decor…..like a saying with picture that can be transferred directly to a wall or wherever you’d like. I love using them to change up a room.
Comment by Angela Hollander — January 22, 2010 @ 4:09 pm
Dear Mary,
I grew up in Affton, not far from where you grew up in Clayton, but did not find your items until I was living in Florida in the late 80’s through the 90’s then came back home to Missouri. Anyway, I fell in love with all your drawings, cherries, flowers, and scotties. They have been such a bright influence on my life (when I was going through some of my most dark moments and months), I just want to thank you for creating them and continue the great work. I truly miss the magazine, but understand why your not continuing it. I would like to see more of your items for the kitchen, and organizational areas. I love the cherries the most, but I know your the expert and will come up with the best items for your future and ours. Again keep up the good work and I will continue to be a huge fan.
Comment by Dawn Williams — January 22, 2010 @ 4:10 pm
I have loved your art since I was in high school…my favorite Mary Engelbreit stuff is my Christmas “Believe” quilt that goes up on my wall every year along with all the ornaments. I would love to knit my own Mary Engelbreit stockings, are they available?
I cannot wait to see where you go designwise next and would love to see more home furnishings, bedding, curtains, dishes, etc…
Happy 2010! Here’s to doing things your way!
Comment by Michele Nordine — January 22, 2010 @ 4:11 pm
Dear Mary, so glad you asked! I will leave all the designs up to you since you never disappoint us. However, I would like to see more retro stuff…loving the color “aqua” right now. The fifties color aqua. Please offer more kitchen items, i.e.; pitchers, plates, & platters’. Go with vintage! I have a lot of your old stuff…it was good quality. Give us more of that! Thanks & good luck. We are all faithful followers.
Comment by Carol — January 22, 2010 @ 4:12 pm
Heh. What about us 24 year old buyers?
I’d love to see more tea sets (I collect and use),bathroom sets (rugs, towels, jars, toothbrush holders etc), more purple stuff! (J’adore purple!), aprons (half and full-oh and not just the box type), did I mention purple?
In anycase, I love what you put out and like others have said, you know best!

Mary,
I know you have probably heard all this before, but I do so miss Home Companion Magazine, especially on cold winter nights, when my little boy is in bed and I can enjoy it. Anyway, I have your calenders all over the place. On my desk, one on the fridge and one by my bed. (Got to stay on top of things)!!! Anyway, Thanks for all your wonderful works of art. They make my day!!!!
Comment by Annaleisa McCurry — January 22, 2010 @ 4:18 pm
How about toy items for all of us preschool teachers out there!! We get to collect and “play with” toys all the time….so if we must…they need to be cute!! I can just see a Very Mary Playhouse on the horizon (similar to the Fisher Price play family houses). Just give it your whimical twist and ta-da — cuteness!!
Comment by Georgeann Forester — January 22, 2010 @ 4:18 pm
I love your dishes. i am needing the chery flat ware just to fill out missing ones. paper plates etc. is good. And rub on wall art. i still love cherries. We moved to Fl and I just kept my ME kitchen stuff because i never get tired of it.I also like your fabric line just can’t find it in stores here in Lakeland FL.

I really miss all of the ME teapots, canisters, dishes, and other ceramic items. I agree with others that bedroom/bathroom accessories would be awesome. Any home decor products would be welcome. I still frame your calendar pages and cards to hang on the walls, which I love, but I’d love to have different products to decorate with or use around the house.
Comment by Paula Cliffe — January 22, 2010 @ 4:19 pm
I agree with the previous post of freeing up some of your designs to embroider-ers. I had a Breit party for my daughter’s 2nd bday. Had a bit of trouble when it came down to her custom outfit, but we managed w/ some “run of the mill” cherries & a tutu. Also, the header stopped my heart as well. Would love to see your take on the trendy re-birth of bohemian style prints like paisley and the sort. I do love the reliability that comes with Target & Michaels, as I dare not take my toddlers in gift shops. I can’t afford their merchandise, even when it’s NOT broken.
Comment by MEmaniac — January 22, 2010 @ 4:19 pm
I agree with kkmack – “I really liked the Arts & Crafts/Prairie style items you did a few years ago. I’d love to see some more of that type of vintage elements”. I see some items in your own home that look like they were made by you that I have never seen available anywhere that I would LOVE to own!!
I adore your art and would love to see it on home decor items that look vintage!

I sill love your coffee mugs and stationery, too.

Mary,
You are such a wonderfully talented lady and I just adore all that you do. Your designs give such a feeling of warmth and happiness that I can’t help but smile.
I’d love to see some thick journals, possibly with a 3D or almost 3D cover, where the image is raised.
I, too, would love to peek into your process and some weekly or monthly tutorials.
Would also love to see a monthly feature on fans around the world. Would love to know if anyone has decorated their homes the Mary Engelbreit way.
Home decor. Yes, I, too, loved the magazine.
Actually, anything you do would be wonderful.
I wish you all the best for the new year. Many blessings to you and yours.

Mary~Because I have been a scrapbooker for years. I would love to see more in the scrapbooking line. It is very limited. I just opened my own scrapbooking store where I teach classes and would love to have kits for them. I am having a mary engelbreit themed crop party on Feb.13th. because you are my favorite artist. I did get the plates and napkins and some other small items at micheals. It was very affordable for me.Thanks for all your wonderful Artwork! I can’t wait to see whats next! Bobbi
Comment by Bobbi Forsythe — January 22, 2010 @ 4:48 pm
Your books are my cherished favorites. The table cover I quilted for my kitchen table was inspired by you. My mailbox is handpainted with one of your designs. I would love to see decor items along the lines of what Mackenzie-Childs produces, only in ME style and on a much MUCH more affordable scale . . . funky objects that can work with many different styles of home decor and accent any room in the house and outside, too. For example . . . I’d LOVE to own a Mary Engelbreit wrought iron garden gate!
Comment by Barbara Bennett — January 22, 2010 @ 4:50 pm
I had to chuckle when I saw Liz de Sousa comment “Have you ever approached the greating card industry?”..LOL…Greeting cards WAS how Mary launched her business and grew to be the licensed giant that she is.
I like the ideas suggested regarding home linens & small home furnishings. I’m thinking comforters, sheets, pillow cases, drapes, vintage shelves, small boutique lamps, and tables. I’ve always loved your dinnerware. Have you seen the prices people get for it on EBay? Amazing!
How about beads? Glass beads, that can be used to design jewelry. Hope all the comments are helpful.
Comment by Cherry Chick — January 22, 2010 @ 4:50 pm
I am ROFL about the people suggesting you make greeting cards and dolls — well, maybe they are 23 year olds . . . . I have my signed Robert Tonner doll from FAO Schwarz in NYC. And I have bought and sent many of your greeting cards. I have most of the arts & crafts vases and bowls. I wish I could have bought the dollhouse I saw years ago but someone else was already in mid-transaction! I have stationery, tea mixes, calendars, rubber stamps, scrapbook supplies, notepads, etc etc etc.
What I would like to see are more personal products. Not sure what, but I have enough prints, pillows, canisters, tins, hot plates and resin letters. Enough home decor. I might like seeing a little Mary when I open my glasses case ( I do have reading glasses somewhere), or use my toothbrush, or put on socks. Little things to enhance my life without bombarding my whole family. And we shop everywhere — high-end malls and department stores, Michael’s, Target, home parties, internet . . .

I would love to see a ME yarn line in your yummy color palattes (natural fibers rather than acrylics), also knitting needles with ME finials & accessories, yarn totes, etc. I have loved you since the beginning, Mary. Follow your bliss and your fans will follow too. Linda-St. Louis, MO.
Comment by Linda S. — January 22, 2010 @ 4:56 pm
Hi Mary,
I have been a fan of yours for as long as I can remember, and am still so disappointed your magazine is no longer being published. I was so happy to see your fabrics in my local fabric shop. What about some wonderful patterns for homey aprons like on the sweet paper dolls you create? Kitchen towels with patterns for embroidered ME design elements would be wonderful too. Anything that can make a home as cozy and sweet as your designs depict would be a welcome addition to a craft lovers world.
Thanks so much for asking! We can’t wait to see what’s next in the wonderful world of ME!

Hey Mary! Thanks for bringing us your art work. Loved the magazine, but hey! We’re going into a paperless/cyber kind of world these days. BTW.. I like the new blog.
Personally, I am one of those folks who has to have something in her hands to do all the time — even while watching the tube… So I’m all for more printed embroidery (too lazy to count it all out by myself). So more of that if you please.

I would love to see another ME dollhouse in 1/12, 1/2″ or 1/4″ scale!

Hi Mary,
I have incorporated the Engelbreit look into my Michigan cottage mostly with the black and white checked pattern with cherries. Last summer I finally used my cherry wallpaper border that I bought years ago. I NEVER grow tired of it. I smile when I see your patterns. BUT, now that you asked….
I need 3 new sets of everyday dishes and would be thrilled to get Engelbreit ones! I have many accent pieces, but would love to find more items that can be used daily in my home. I would also like to find kitchen curtains, placemats, towels, etc for my home. I would like to see nautical, seaside, LODGE or CABIN LOOK or FISHING/HUNTING themes, more fruit themes, OTHER DOG breed themes… we have a pointer named Lola…she’s a showdog, ha ha and , my daughter has a huge Great White Pyrenees named Tucker and a blond Labradoodle named Lucy that certainly could be inspiration for your artwork. Possibly you could make some dog toys?.
I am a nurse in a family practice office and would LOVE more scrubs in your prints, and other Engelbreit items…stethoscope perhaps?
I’m thinking I may be a grandma in the near future so, baby furniture and bedding, baby snow suits, baby clothes, toys, etc.
How about Costumes for Halloween?
How about Hawaiian theme items or Caribbean theme…. hibiscus, orchids, palms….etc.
Cruise theme items?
Campfire themes?
Pirate themes?
Golf bags and other golf themed items
bicycle items… bells, horns, baskets
more slippers, robes, tshirts in different styles, sox, gloves
Scarves, headbands, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, cameras, cell phone cases,
stamping papers, stamps, ribbons, etc.
Benches, chairs, cushions, pillows
Carrying cases, beachbags, laptop cases
More holiday items
more watches,
video games and illustrating children’s videos.
Car seat covers, steering wheel covers, other auto items.
OK, I’ve become a brainstorming monster. I’ll stop here. You get the picture…. we all love you and your artwork and ANYTHING MARY is a thrill to have!
Hope this list helps!

I’m trying to fix up my studio. Things to help organizer and decorate a sewing, art, beading, embroidery studio/area would be great. I have all the things I’ve collected over the years, but can always use more ME!! I look forward to your new designs and ventures.

Organizers! I would love to have ME soft containers for my scrapbooking stuff.
Folders with pockets for full pages (letter size) in ME style. I love my ME things I touch everyday.
I need stickers. In New Zealand it is very difficult to buy ME things, but my family can send me stickers. I use them for scrapbooking, but really love them for my everyday things I touch. I put the same ME sticker on the front page of my Franklin planner every year – it is “Most Folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be” – Abraham Lincoln. Has the two girls in the window. I have one more left, so will need something for 2012! I’d prefer matt stickers rather than shiney.
Thanks for asking.

Oh Mary, I’m so glad to hear that you’ll be following your heart! I’ve been a fan for years and years and am anxious to see what you come up with next. I’d love to see ME dinnerware…more prints, lots more framable prints…picnic sets…outdoor/garden accessories….gosh, you’ve already done all of this! Here’s my ME dream – big sets of Christmas ornaments, polka dots & patterns, lots of sparkle…I’d love to do a whole ME tree!
Comment by Nancy — January 22, 2010 @ 5:19 pm
Mary – thanks for the honor of being able to share our opinions!!! You’re the best! A few thoughts:
*How about more cross-stitch books? Whatever the design I love your items.
*How about fairies? I would love to decorate my daughter’s room in fairies. I’m thinking bold colors – bright purples, pinks, yellows, etc. No wimpy fairies! LOL!
*I LOVED the design of your desk calendar from about 9 years ago (included full month layout plus weekly layouts and included LOTS of your full page artwork). I MISS it and have to get my calendars elsewhere as your more recent designs don’t meet my needs. Please reconsider going back to the old design.
*I love the non-traditional Santas – what about a line of Santa designs – one for Japan, one for Australia, one for Germany, one for Africa, etc? That would be GREAT!!!!!
I have LOVED ME designs since I was introduced to them and have been blessed with a mother-in-law who also loves ME!!! One of the many things we have in common!
Thanks so much!!!!

Mary,
I love your things…and I agree with some of the others about small home furnishings..like sheets, pillowcases, comforters (I have 2 of yours now but could only find twin size..) and that was a few years ago.
Also scrub tops…I am a nurse and would love them, and nursing assistants, vet assistants and others would wear them too, I think badge holders would be equally popular.
I also have a blown glass tea pot ornament from your collection, but have never found any other glass ornaments.
I am looking forward to seeing new designs from you, but will always like the old ones too!
Thanks.

Dear Dear Mary!
I saw your first cherry teapot over 20 years ago, maybe 15, maybe more, but I know over 10 years. I Should have bought it that day, but thought, not enough money. When I went back, it was gone. It was before I knew about pay pal. I never did get that 1st round cherry tea pot. But I do have a collection of Mary, thanks to you keeping up with designing them. I have been one of your faithful collectors for years. I can tell you what I like and miss. I love your kitchen decor, complete with table settings. I do have the wall clock, cherry theme. Almost everything in my kitchen is your design. I have the “cherriest” little kitchen.
I can spot Mary a mile away and so can my friends and children. Your cards, posters, cross stitch, fabric, calendars, magazines, books, and figurines. I have some of all. I have seen a bowl fountain, but it just didn’t work for anything that I have…now it would be cute in my front garden. I have no boarder wall art. I do like the idea of the “press on the wall” sayings. My daughters painted the “Queen Poster” on my kitchen cabinets. They are highly talented. My other daughter bought your calendar and cut it apart to make me a picture calendar. You could make a calendar with stickers, that people could finish on their own using their own photos. I could send you an example of what H. did for me.
I like your small little figurines. I want/need more. I have one of your dolls. I love the magnet paper dolls. I think the alphabet was great, though I did not get any. I have a Mary Christmas tree. I have been gifted all of the ornaments. It stands 5 feet tall. I did add some glass blown hearts to it.
I also collect Rie Munoz. She is an Ak artist who uses the same colors in all of her art work. It is a trade mark of hers. Don’t think you have to change for anyone. I have liked your style of art for so many years. I have chosen your art to display in one entire room of my home. That says it all.
I am also a quilter and I have more of your collection then I can use in a life time. Put some of your children on a panel with different clothes so we can make our own paper dolls out of the cut outs (I saw this by another designer, so it is not original, but I would buy yours as well as hers). I would like a panel so I can make a 30’s type of quilt along with matching fabrics. I can forward you some designs if you decide you would like more input. Bags and purses are in with quilters now. You need your own bag design and quilt design with your fabric. Maybe a quilt book.
Enough about “ME” (LOL).
You are great and what you have done is great. You can just continue on, I will still collect. Thank you so very much for adding SO (SEW) VERY MUCH” to my life!
And that idea just came to me for a Mary saying “Thank you sew very much” used along with the fabric designed with the feather weight sewing machine:0)
Happy Creating!

Hi Mary,
You are quite likely aware that there is a fairly big population of American families who have adopted children from China over the last decade. We love your Gracie character and many of us have been scrambling over the years to find and buy anything with her on it. The Tonner dolls (Ann Estelle, Georgia, Gracie, etc.) were truly fabulous and worth every penny. I own two collections of them, one for me and one for my daughter.
I do love the stuff you do for teachers and classrooms. As a retired teacher, I am now home schooling our little girl. Our classroom at home has a decidedly Mary Engelbreit flavor. More classroom organizational tools and even classroom furniture would be great.
I think most people are happy to pay for good quality. I agree with what other posters have said about the quality of some things over the years. I would love to see you do more high-end products. I have passed up things over the years because the quality of the merchandise did not live up to the genius of your designs.
And if you could re-visit Gracie again in some way, you would make lots of happy mothers and daughters. Maybe some more children’s books? Can Gracie have a story of her own?
Best wishes in 2010.
Comment by Susan Tudor — January 22, 2010 @ 5:35 pm
Mary – thank you! As a long time collector and fan of yours I am so glad you are going back to what you do best. I have to say that seeing you in some of the “lesser” quality stores hurt. I miss you in the little special stores I love to go to when I am on vacation or visiting smaller towns. It was such a treat to walk in and see your items and think that I could get something that wasn’t available all over!
As far as new ideas, I would love to see something a little more mainstream in the way of design. Something for my bathroom that is rustic, or something for the dining room that is not so “primary color”. I know you have the talent to do this – and will look forward to the coming years to see what you come up with.
One other comment – how come you never come to the west coast? I met you at a bookstore in Willow Glen, CA about 5 years ago and all of us in line would love to have you back in this area again. Maybe a tour to introduce a new line of ME???
Comment by Debbie Tryforos — January 22, 2010 @ 5:43 pm
I agree with the comments on more home furnishing lines. I also loved the wallpapers you did for a brief time – not just the Wallies but the line of full room wallpapers. I still have a couple rolls of the teapots.
The independent gift shops have always been a favorite place to shop, but so many of them have gone out of business in our area. But I would gladly travel to a larger city to find your items.
I,too, loved to look at the room details in your cards and would love to buy small furnishings that are styled after those images. My favorite image of all time is “Bloom Where You’re Planted”. LOVE my large teapots and would like to add more. I always lusted after a set of dishes but never bought one. I could afford it now so please bring ‘em on!
I thought your Arts and Crafts pieces were a really good idea and would love to see more. The rub-off decal idea of some of your sayings for walls would be great! In addition to your designs I collect Italian pottery pieces from the 40’s and 50’s – they have that same sort of colorful style that inspires joy.
In my breakfast room, which I call my Engelnook, I have the border “Family Friends Home Love”. Really, it says it all when it comes to the feelings your work has always evoked for me, and are the things that are most important in life. You’ve always depicted those things in the most original, beautiful and unique ways.
Thanks for the opportunity to express my ideas – I can’t wait to see what this decade brings for those of us with “Engelbreitis”!

I can only echo what everyone else has suggested. I would love to see a ME set of china that is high quality. More home decor. I love the bright cheery colors of your artwork and I hope you will keep that element!

ME,ME,ME it’s my turn! Cara Mary….I love RED that’s how I met and start liking your work. Didn’t even know there was a magazine out. Pot holders, tea cups, kitchen knobs, creamer and sugar…are all over my kitchen, my stove was RED now Buttercup yellow still with RED. I do a lot of soldering and I build birdhouses and decorate bottles, so anything to do with that? No need to thank me, miss your work and love checking your blog Ciao Rita mammabellarte

Thank you for sharing yourself with the world through your art. You have been a part of my life since I was 7yrs old. I went to choir practice, and afterwards was allowed to browse alone in the small, cozy, wonderful gift shop next door. I would save my money each week and buy bookmarks with your art. I had them all! 20 yrs later, I cherish those memories! Thank you for providing such joy.
As far as new things, here are a few thoughts:
- small furnishings: I loved the resin initials & figurines, and would love notion shelves and boxes
- kitchen things: linens, utensils, canisters, dishes
- love the posted above ME Christmas tree idea! I would totally have one as well!
- clothing? I used to have a “lifes’ too mysterious…” tee but haven’t seen any in the last few years. Slippers would be great!
Thanks again Mary

Oops, I forgot to write the affirmations I thought of for you! You’ve got pluck, lady!
Go you. I believe you have a print with the quote “Go confidently in the direction of your dreams” (or something to that effect). So you go and we’ll trail after.
Also, I live in a small ND town and we have a great antiques/gift/coffee shop that would be a perfect place for more Mary. If you’re ever looking for independent places in small towns, the shop is Fezziwigs’ Warehouse in Garrison, ND =)

Dear Mary,
Thank you so much! Your calendar has graced my kitchen wall for many years. And, this year I have the wall calendar AND the day-by-day calendar.
OK. I do have one disappointment. I miss the narrower format wall calendar because the wall I hang it on is only 12″ wide. The 12″-wide calendar does work, but I loved that format that was about an inch smaller. Well, I might be out of luck here, but I was stretching to find something I was disappointed about!
I love the wonderful sayings you use. As for my calendars, so often they set the tone for my day. Please continue with the humor, the positive thoughts, the encouragement, and your gentle and wise humanity. Thanks again. And, your desire to follow your heart and get back to basics, so to speak, is a philosophy I admire and aspire to myself.

I love any ME! I hope you received my previous request for an ME Valentine Fabric Line. I love all the fabric lines and have many many ME quilts that I hang all around my house. Please do a new Valentine Line – I can’t get enough! I would also love an ME Home Decor line. I’ve been trying to find a cute ottoman, chair and end-table to put in my “design” room and I would love to be able to purchase the ones you actually design so I don’t have to worry about messing it up! I love anything you do and can’t wait to see what’s next!

Hi,
How about an online magazine. I am a knitter and have found two wonderful magazines, knitty.com and twistcollective.com.
I love your artwork, but also your vision for place, environment and introduction to artists, that I found in your magazine.
Other than that, I always buy your page a day calendar and collect your santa prints.
good luck finding your new voice! And good for you for not giving in to the dictates of corporate America.

I have always thought it would be wonderful to be able to buy Ann Estelle’s clothes for my daughters! I would SO love to dress them like her! She is always so cute and coordinated, with such classic, childlike designs and bright beautiful colors. If you could design a line of Ann Estelle clothes that would fit real little girls, I’d be over the moon excited!

Mary,
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing your talents with all of us who adore you. Would love huggable dolls for my daughter who is 4 and grandaughter who is 2 based on your papT
erdolls. Also, would love some prints for my kitchen in pastels colors. Cupcakes and pies and pretty aprons, etc. Want you to know how much happiness your art, books, magazine, calenders habrought to me and my mom through the years. She is now a great grandma and retired and now has time to devote herself to doing what she likes. She has been so inspired by you and is now devoting much of her time creating wonderful drawings in her own unique, whimsical style. I also just have to say thank you for including so many different ethnicities and cultures in your art. That is especially important to me as my family is it’s own little melting pot.

It has amazed me, while I’ve read all these suggestions, how many of these items I have bought of yours……dinnerware, embroidery designs, prints, cross stitch kits, pj’s, ornaments, craft books….the list goes on and on. You have certainly given us a variety of goodies to collect and enjoy through the years. I think it’s like the baseball field movie “If you build it , they will come”. Obviously, ” If you design it , we will buy “!!!!! So, I can’t wait to see what you come up with next. Haven’t seen a Mary “Moose” in all these years. Now, that would be fun !

I miss your store so much. I wish they would come back but with things the way they are I know that is not soon. Your work is amazing and when I would get your magazine it was the only one I would read from front to back and back to front. Have everyone of them and love them just as much today as I did when I first got them several years back. I know you will be around for along time to come. We love you Mary.

Oh My it is quilting, I love your fabric line–next music, after all these years I still must play music in a band every week–and lastly with the aging of the baby boomers I am into physical activity (running)I need places to hang my ribbons, medals, and runners bibs. A ME design would be awesome!! Good Luck and I look forward to your spreading your wings!! I think of you daily as I also love your calendars!!

Mary,
Isn’t it wonderful to finally act upon what we really think and feel?! Personally, I would love to walk into an office supply store and find an entire line of products to fit my dayrunner…not just blank pages to fill in the dates, etc, but a line that is competitive with others with daily, weekly, and monthly refills as well as address pages, etc. Looking at your designs many times a day would add such sprinkles of joy! Whatever you decide, it will be wonderful…best of luck to you! We are out here waiting to see what you will do next!

What do you think about some fun Paris art, gifts and Decor. Old market place, Flower shops, Eiffel Tower,Tea houses, Bistros and just everything Paris. Lots of Pinks and Blacks, polka dots or something more Romantic along those lines.
I live in California and this type of decor is becoming quite popular! Vendors can’t keep this decor on the shelves!!
This is what I would like to see more of.
Thank you Mary for listening to our opinions.

I would like to see kitchen stuff. Cannisters, teapots, teacups, stuff we can display. I still love the primary colors for your designs. Houses, anything with houses in the pictures. And paper. Scrapbooking paper, postcards, envelopes, storage boxes, etc.
I also use your paper goods to make dollhouse and mini scenes. There are thousands of us ME fans in the miniature world.

Way back when, when you could only find M.E. at little gift shops here and there, it was a great adventure – sort of a treasure hunt! You never knew what new delight you would come across, and that was fun. And, I hope this won’t hurt your feelings, but the quality of the items “back then” was so much better. As much as I love just about EVERYTHING M.E., I didn’t buy a thing from Michael’s this year because it all looked so cheap! The resin things I mean. Although, I do appreciate being able to pick up M.E. close out paper items like cards and bookmarks in the Michael’s dollar bin. Just my two cents. My fav. item (and I have LOTS of “stuff”) is the set of 3 kitchen cannisters, one black with a cherry top, one yellow, one green, and all polka dotted and checked. Still sits in a place of honor in every kitchen of every home I’ve lived in. LONG LIVE QUEEN MARY!

Dear, dear Mary,
I have loved your work since I found a beaten up card for sale in a dusty store, over 20 years ago. I have been buying your productions online, from card stores and from Winners stores here in Toronto, Canada. Unfortunately, most Canadians don’t seem to “get it” about your charm. I do, though, and buy it and give it in large amounts. The calendars are most popular here, so keep them coming. Also, keep doing the Scottie things – my favourite dogs to see on dinnerware, etc. You are right – your earlier work when you had more control was much more “you” than recent works. I shall be praying and watching for you from now on…

Good for you Mary! I can hear that independent spirit coming out through your words and you are right, you know your art better than anyone else and we out here love it.
At Christmas I did go to Michaels with the purpose of purchasing gifts for my sisters who also love your art in any shape or form. (just like me) I purchased some paper coasters for them, but really hoped I would find some hard surface coasters with your artwork, so they could be used forever! Another idea I would love to purchase would be a chalkboard with your artwork around the outside of it so I could put it up in my kitchen for daily notes to family etc… (I especially love your reds and blacks like in your cherry art)
Hope those ideas are useful to you.
Thank you Mary for spreading your love and humor out to us to purchase.

Since my favorite art work was always the children and how you dressed them, I would love to see sewing patterns for children.
I own a children’s boutique and design hand-made children’s crocheted hats. I go to Michael’s and buy your little gift enclosure cards that say “Keep it under your hat”. They are free to customers when they buy my Pick-A-Posie hats and everyone loves them. I appreciate that they come in a $1 pack so I can afford to give them away.

I would also love to see anything for the kitchen–teapots, canisters. I really, really miss the magazine SO much– I used to show it to my girls and say “see? be creative, believe in yourself”, and I loved all the artists that you highlighted.
Just follow your instincts and do what you love, so you’ll keep doing it–and thanks so much for everything!

Being a fan for the last 20 years. I have had a themed ME baby room, living room, office , kitchen, and now a bedroom. Which is for my mom who also loves your stuff… I have always had to make my own drapes( cherry) furniture, and even painted a wall scene in your stuff.. I own tons of teapots, dishes mostly in the black and white checkered cherries, any bright colors. I probably could of had my own ME store. lol.. I love the cherry stuff. I have always wished you came out with already made bedding. Or chandeliers, ect. Drapes. I remember when Mervyns carried your stuff.. Maybe you can work a deal with Target and do all the stuff i requested. lol.. just kidding. Ok, no i am not…Check out my blog sometime and see how much you insipre me… mishelle

i too would like to see inserts for “dayplanners” with some of your quotes & pics – I still use a print planner (some years are very ordinary looking – having something festive (but professional looking) would be most helpful. I think others in my office would also purchase padded lined tablets (the kind with the cardboard back) that can also be inserted in “planner covers” (think: resume covers, portfolio covers)… it would be nice to take notes on cute pads of paper – 8 1/2 x 11 inches… your art has kept me in smiles on “gloomy, difficult days” – Good Luck!
Oh – stickers – scrapbooking supplies would be fun too.

Oh yes also forgot what about re-purposing some of your artwork on old items. One of my favorite local stores has a website I’ll share http://www.goodjujukc.com try it out for yourself. Only open one week-end a month but surely there are many others like it around.
Comment by Peggy — January 22, 2010 @ 10:24 pm
OK, so I am just brainstorming here….
1.Since the magazine is no longer an option, I hope you will be able to publish more books. I really love all the books you have done in the past… Plates, Outdoor companion, Christmas companion, and the one about your new home, just to name a few. So many wonderful ideas and such fun! A book about paperdolls maybe?
2. I think it would be really nice to see a new Christmas card design every year, and maybe a coordinating tree ornament or two.
3.And how about a line of furniture and home decor items based on some of the vintage things you have in your seaside cottage, or the pieces your Grandfather made…
4. More Kitchen and bed linens. Tableclothes, comforters, etc…
5. I know you have always loved the bright red and yellows, but I usually decorate in blues and greens and would love to see more items that would match my home.
6. How about some gorgeous ME designs on keepsake heart shaped boxes and tins of Russell Stover chocolate Valentine candy.
7. How about a ME wedding chapel and garden gazebo reception site with lovely swans in the pond. And have a whole line of wedding invites, cake toppers, etc.
8. Or a ME bed and breakfast in ST Louis that people can come and stay in?
I don’t know… anything you want to do is fine with me. You are just so amazing and I am so sad that the magazine is gone.. I just need a little Mary in my life and am willing to take it any way I can get it!
Comment by Gayle — January 22, 2010 @ 10:33 pm
Well I own a Scottie named Ladybug so I have to say I am partial to your Scottie art. Although I have always loved anything you put out there. Bring on the new stuff though because we all need and love change.
Comment by Brenda Towsley — January 22, 2010 @ 10:41 pm
I loved and miss your magazine! I also love the “feeling” that your art brings to me….comfortable, cute, homey, cheerful, friendly, …like a friend! I love anything paper and I love the idea of office supplies. I am probably the ONLY person who doesn’t have a calendar on my phone…I carry a “Mary” calendar in my purse and I can schedule much faster than those phone folks! You say to follow your dreams…so do what you love the way you love it…and I know we will love it too.
Comment by Bev — January 22, 2010 @ 10:47 pm
I also would like to see more items that are functional, and will last, rather than being ‘consumable’. For example, I have two coffee mugs of yours that I bought many years ago that I use every day. Each one has an inspirational quote on it and I would love to buy more things like that to keep your artwork in front of me on a daily basis.
Comment by Marie Keefe — January 22, 2010 @ 10:58 pm
I agree with all the people saying trust your artistic instincts.
But that won’t stop me from answering about what sort of items I’m most in the market for:
SPECIFIC TYPES OF ITEMS
* More decorating books like “Home Companion” and “Outdoor Companion”
* Home decor: curtains, throw pillows, fabric, quilts/bedspreads
* Garden/porch decor: figures, wicker chairs
* Kitchen items: glass drinkware, towels, tablecloths
* Bathroom accessories: shower curtain, soap dish, lotion/soap dispenser, etc.
THEMES AND STYLE
* Flowers, leaves, birds, butterflies, seahorses
* Images/motifs with the sort of ethereal feeling of vintage children’s book illustrations
* Art Deco
* Whimsical
* Violet, violet-blue, greens, magenta, black, white, silver
As for the “Where do you shop?” question: I now mostly shop online for gifts, housewares, accessories, and books.
Comment by Erika — January 22, 2010 @ 11:24 pm
Ditto to many of the above comments. I love red, I have a scotty named Jasmine and you have always been a wonderful resource for cute scotty items. I have longed for ME bedding coordinates. I have always enjoyed many of the decorative accents but would love to see more main items for the home, maybe a bed with birds and birdsnests at the top of the posts with coordinating lamps. More teapots and dishes. A Companion book devoted to cottages and cottage living. I’m sure I will love whatever your creative heart designs!!
Comment by Lynette Gaitan — January 22, 2010 @ 11:35 pm
I’ve always wished I could have a big, overstuffed chair, just like in your drawings. Have you ever thought of going into the furniture business? I also vote for bedroom linens and bathroom shower curtains. Lampshades too. The first Mary Engelbreit item I ever bought was an iron-on decal for t-shirts. I believe this was even before the magazine. How about decals to “Mary-up” painted furniture, wall decorations, etc. Please, no plastic doodads.

Mary, I love that you want to be real and continue to evolve as an artist. I cannot wait to see what you come up with. I love the full size calendars, and I love beach themes. While I love your primary colors, I love pastels too. I am a huge fan of your page-a-day calendars too, which I think are published through Andrews-McMeil. I love your sayings, and your drawings with families and animals. Would you consider something with lambs (they are my favorite.) But I am rejoicing with you that you will have the freedom to explore what you can do as an independent artist. Onward! And God Bless you too.

Mary your Art and Style is just that, yours. You are an incredibly talented person who God has given us to enjoy the talents of.
I would like to see “affordable” items for the everyday person, especially at this time in our economy. I’m a big crocheter, I love it, I taught myself a year ago and I haven’t put the hooks down since. Do you think that you could hook up with a crochet designer who could take some things out of your designs and make some crochet patterns up for us? I don’t mean just afghans either. I’ve got the crochet pattern of your scottie dog,I just haven’t been able to get to it yet. I’ve made the crocheted teapot pincushion. I also just received the yarn I ordered for the rugs in your leaflet. Leisure Arts is a great place to get your designs publihed. hint hint Maybe some products that can be embellished with crochet? I love your fabrics but Wal-Mart only carries about three of the same ones. Affordable gifts, I know I’d love to have anything ME! I have a collection of teapots and would love to see it grow even more with ME ones! Oh let’s face it, you’re at a point in your life that you’ve gone to the top and became a household name and now you can do whatever you want. Which you always could and chose to share with the rest of us and for that I’m grateful. Please continue to share with us in whatever way you want ’cause we’ll be happy with anything.

Hi Mary, it sounds like you have some wonderful ideas. I miss walking in to a gift shop and getting that warm feeling when I would spot something ME! There were several gift shops in Cincinnati that carried your gift items. I loved the ceramic figurines (and think I have them all). I also loved the little teapot ornaments in the cute little boxes. I have 95 of them and my husbad made me a special shelf unit to display them. I do love the Arts & Crafts pattern and would love fabric in that line. Your greeting cards are the best so never stop making them. I love the cupcake papers at Michaels but would love to be able to purchase higher quality items such as the socks and notepads etc. Oh the emery boards are cute too. It sounds like you are headed in the right direction. I miss the magical feeling of stepping into one of your stores though. Maybe you need to have a focus group made up of your facebook fans and the still together AOL Rosebuds. We know and love your “stuff” so much. Thanks Mary

Mary, since I first saw the cheerful, yellow Bloom Where You’re Planted tin in 1987, I’ve been an enthusiastic fan. I’ve given and received many of your books and products over the last 2 decades-plus; and like everyone else zealously guard my HC magazine collection.
Here’s what I’d dearly love to see: More of that evocative 30s and 40s feel, but perhaps a bit less countryish and a tad more “middle class family gathered ’round the radio” urbane. Not so much the harsh haute art deco, mind you, but definitely with that sparkly ME-itude. My very favorite pieces of yours are the impish, in-your-face stuff like the Snap Out of It and I’m in Charge Here pillows which still grace my living room and car.
I’d love to see more personal accessories such as purses, wallets, umbrellas, pillboxes, glasses cases, and the like. I miss those. How about a laptop case and iPod cozy for the techno TwentyTenners?
Your new website design is FANTASTIC! Kudos to the designer/s! Thanks for all the Make-and Takes, and please give us more!
Lastly, many of us in this economy just can’t shell out over a thousand smackeroos to fly to St. Louis, stay at a hotel, eat at restaurants, and attend your workshop–no matter how much we long to! What about having a DVD or download “Here with ME” version available? I could clearly ask for something like that and realistically hope to receive it–and I can’t think of anything I’d enjoy more. There are other artists online who do this for their paying members (SuziBlu comes to mind) as well as conducting the more costly live workshops.
Your sweet, goofy artwork has brought joy and comfort–and real smiles–to me during the hardest time of my life this past decade. Thanks for all you do to make our journey more pleasant!

Mary – I’ve been a fan for many years – I’ve been the “queen of everything” for my family for a very long time. I would love to see more “Queen” merchandise. I also love your children’s books – I’m thrilled that you illustrate classic stories. Would love to see more. I love the office products that I get through Colorful Images – file folders, address labels, etc….Also love that I can get fabrics with your designs – I love to quilt.
Thanks for asking for our input – please keep us in the loop as new products and designs come out.!

I first started my love of Mary Engelbriet design when I was 8 years old. It was your tea sets for children. I begged my mom for this set. I believe you only made three sets and I have them all. There is the girl with watering can, a bear one, and a kitten one. Funny thing is my mom wouldn’t let me play with them! However I now still have them in mint condition and signed by you. They are my treasures. When I was pregnant with my daughter I searched and searched to get her a set and finally found one on ebay. And yes for anyone reading this… I am going to let her play with her set. haha
Anywho I would love to see you do more. I think it is a perfect fit with independent gift stores and specialty stores. What ever you plan on doing please stay away from large volume. What I love most about my tea sets is that nobody has them and everybody that has ever seen them wants them.

Mary:I have been a fan of yours for years and so much love your artwork. I am a scrapbooker and resently started teaching classes. something I would love to see is more in the scrapbooking line. I have picked up a few things to use at Micheals, but it is very limited. So I would love to see more paper and stickers. In feb. I am having mary engelbreit crop,so I picked up what I could that would work at micheals which I might add was very reasonable. Thanks for sharing your artwork with the world.

As a fellow artist, I just love everything that you do. I love your calendars, your books, your cards. I always have done. I think that no matter what you turn your inks and colours to, they will turn into gold for you, because you have something that the world loves, and that is talent. I wish that I could accomplish even a half of what you have done.

I would love to see more greeting cards!! There hasn’t been a new birthday card at Barnes Noble for months!! I see so many illustrations of yours on all your calendars…(and I buy every one of them) every year..so please put these beautiful drawings on your cards so that I can spread my love for ME to all my friends!
Stickers too! Your artwork is too classy for the $1.00 bin at Michael’s!!!

Anything ME is what I love. The sayings and quotes combined with the art just make my day. It helps me to stay centered in this often harsh world. I collect anything I can get my hands on but things and sources are limited.
I agree with all the posts -most especially – fabric, sewing, books and those kinds of things.
In addition, I’ve always wanted plaques to hang on the wall and change around.
Fabric: I am addicted to Moda and ME.
Themes: Long for “Home” themed items. Rooms, houses, cottages, paths, trellises, gardens, mills, steamboats (how did that get in there), chickens. Bridges.
An extension of the Home theme – is the vintage Winnebago RV. Would like to see these featured as part of the art in some products; mugs, plaques, fabric, messenger bags, picnic basket with service inside. There is a huge membership of loyal Winnie owners and many LOVE ME. RV Winnie people also love doggies.
I could go on forever. Wish I had a ME shop. That would be heaven. Maybe a mobile ME in my super fancy RV.
Comment by Mary Meiser — January 23, 2010 @ 7:04 am
The commenters have given you some great ideas, and I agree that I would rush out to buy any books you publish, stationary items, linens and more FABRIC. I did not read every entry, but if no one mentioned it, I love your DOLLS. Paper dolls, small dolls, ceramic “figurine”-type dolls to collect, and I even have one larger, soft doll, for which I made a Christmas outfit I use every year. She needs more friends!
The Vintage look is my absolute favorite!
Best wishes.

I LOVE your comment “Well, goodbye and good riddance to THAT decade.” I realized that, yes, I am ready to forget about it and move ahead. I bought some of your paper products at Michael’s around Christmastime, they are always so cheery and very reasonably priced there. I have enjoyed your jigsaw puzzles in the past. I do not know if you still have any of those (don’t see them on your site). But, I do recommend getting a quality company that makes sturdy puzzle pieces. FYI: I like 500 piece puzzles rather than 1,000, more do-able. Thanks so much for adding happiness to my life.

Hi Mary,
I have loved everything you have made for 20 years! I love Ann Estelle!! I am 34 and am a quilter! So fabric, fabric, fabric! How about your paper dolls and their cloths in fabric! More Ann Estelle dolls! A convention where you teach drawing lessons and the techniques you use! More Ann Estelle books etc.etc. We love and enjoy your calendars! If it has your signiture ME we love! Good luck in the New Year!

Hi Mary,
I have been buying your designs every year since 1990. I saw some room sized area rugs one time, and then when I was ready to order one, they are not to be found anywhere! I loved the black with cherries nd the checked border, or maybe a tan center with the FEF border.
Furniture would also be something I would enjoy such as the console table for the entry or end tables, and possibly dining room as well.
On the pricing end, I would not pay over a thousand dollars for a room sized rug, an no more than 300 or so for console table so that could be an issue with your decor designs. I am sure many others would pay more though.
Please check out my FB page, Texas Librarian, for tips on ways to read aloud with your little ones in a way to make thinking visible and help increase their comprehension skills by showing them how you think and make connections when you read.
Happy 2010–I have your new desk calendar as always. I save the old one’s pages and my children at school love to dig through them to find their birthday and they use them for bookmarks.

Mary, can’t wait to see what you come out with next. Some products I would love to see include some more office items. I love having your items at my desk to brighten my day. My other new obsession is with vinyl wall words/art. Your quotes and/or your designs would be a perfect addition to any room of the house. Looking forward to seeing more of your items back at gift shops!

Mary, I love everything you do! I miss your magazine — it was a “breit” spot for me every month and I’m still reviewing the past issues.
I would love to see ME furniture and accessories…I would definitely buy a chair, a lamp, art/framed pictures (especially vintage looking), sofa, bookshelves, etc.
I would also like do-it-youself crafts.
Comment by Moonindy — January 23, 2010 @ 10:02 am
Mary,
I would love to see a book or even an e-book about licensing and how you did it. I’ve been a potter for 30 years and I’m trying to get my designs into other media now. I subscribed to the magazine, bought your books and various decorative items. I tried to get my DIL to do the baby’s room a la Mary but when she didn’t I “grandmothered” my guest room instead. As I struggle at the age of 60+ to take my art into another direction, I’d love more info and suggestions from you about how to accomplish it. Thanks for being you and caring about us.
Comment by Sari — January 23, 2010 @ 10:38 am
Mary,
I’ve been an ME fan from VERY early (80’s). I’ve even got early cards and will NEVER give them up. Your art makes the happy in me bubble up and when I’m feeling low (there’s a lot of that lately with a job loss pending etc) all I have to do is pull out some cards or flip through one of your books, plan a quilt with some of the ME fabric I have, or just study on a Poster (”Home is where the heart is”is within sight right now) and I feel uplifted. Mary, your messages come from real life, the kind of things that matter in day to day living and the things that we all experience. THAT’s what I love about ME (oh, yeah, plus the color and the people you draw and the flowers and the cherries and the….ok, I’ll stop) Please keep focusing in your art on the day to day things that all of us come into contact with. My favorite medium to work with is fabric so if you wanted to take off on that, I’d be tickled! (Maybe a main fabric with a large flower motif and some coordinates)
My best friend and I turned 50 this month (January) and we are celebrating our new decade by coming to the workshop in April. We can hardly wait! I’ll see you there….

I was so excited after reading your blog, to scroll down to your GO Wild picture. As a Balloon artist of nearly 27 years You Have captured my Spirit and My Heart! I have been a lifetime fan and have always had a kindred connection to your artwork, but this one GRABBED me!! Thank you So much and whatever artwork flows through your heart and out the tips of your fingers, I will be awaiting, and enjoying! Let the spirit move you, Those who Love you, will continue to…

Hello Mary!
I just sent a message to you through Facebook (and friend request – I’d be honored!) prior to reading your blog. In it, I commented on how much I miss Home Companion Magazine. From reading your blog I now realize that HCM is not likely to return any time soon. Though I am saddened by this, I do understand. Would it be possible to publish more books like “Living the Artful Life”? This was a tremendous publication and I love to see more like it! Thanks for the many years of happiness you’ve brought to me and my family through your amazing creativity.

I love everything you put out there. I have to admit I have things I don’t normally use just because it had your design on it.LOL I am a scrapbooker, stamper, crafter, etc.. I would love to see you get back into making items for paper crafting! Not only 12×12 paper but paper or silk flowers for crafting(like Prima does), ribbon, buttons, totes, or any storage items. My craft room is decorated with your motif. The walls are a mustard yellow with red and black accents. I have bought some of your fabric and plan on making curtains and pillows. I would love to have a chair recovered in the fabric!! Wow, sorry I got carried away! I would love anything you put out there!! Thanks

I have loved your work since I first saw it, don’t know where, but loved it. It is fresh, and lovely, witty and kind, and so hopeful. Any time I find a product somewhere, whether it is in a fabric place, or wherever, I take great pleasure in looking at the colors and artistry on the object, even if it is a button, or something others might consider a trifle. You are an artist, Mary, and telling you what to create for the marketplace is really unfair, especially for young people who haven’t lived (I generalize), or FOCUS GROUPS! I like what you do, and if you like what you do, then we will like it, too. Thank you for taking our interests and desires into consideration–that goes to show how much you care about your loyal fans and admirers. Yes, you need to work and make a living, but the joy you create for us is probably right up there with the joy you get in doing it. At least, I hope so! Much love to a wonderfully talented woman, ANN FLYNT

Hi Mary:
I am a member of the AOL Rosebud Group that was started oh-so-long ago (almost 15 years?). We came together because of a love of your art but have stayed together because of the love for each other. We have nursed each other through many tough times: divorces, ill children and parents, cancers, moves, losses of jobs, and yes – even death as we have lost several Rosebud members. I celebrate my 10th year as a breast cancer survivor this month – and one of the things that helped me through that time was the support of my Rosebud friends around the country and being able to come to the AOL message board each day and share the steps of my journey. This was before Facebook, Caring Bridge Websites, Blogs, Twitter and Tweet! Many of us have met each other many times over the years and agree that we are truly blessed with these “Bonus Friendships.”
Your love for children, home, family and friends has always come through in your artwork and it is what drew us all to you. Please keep up with your original dream and gift – which was to bring your artwork to your fans and create happiness in them. Please keep drawing your wonderful scenes of life! For me, this is where your gift lies. I see my own life in so many of your drawings and it is such a blessing.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for making a difference in my life, and in so many others. We are glad you are sticking around!
With love,
Patti

Mary~ I have been a fan since the beginning. You have inspired me as an entrepreneur, as a mom, wife and friend! I am most fond of your illustrations using either poetry or Scripture or another quote to spur us on to love and good deeds. Being a gardener by hobby I have loved finding “yard art” that has been ME produced. I also have enjoyed your Christmas craft books. As far as your art itself, I am personally drawn to the whimsy but have really appreciated seeing your other styles; your talent is definitely a gift! Keep drawing!

Oh Mary, such talent , I’m always in awe!! I adore your books, I have everyone of them, even the cookbooks (and of course all those fabulous magazines). They are wealth of information that I keep referring too. They have influenced so many of our travels, the featured weekends and private insights wetted my appetite to discover these places.I realize this is a cost factor, but I would love to be able to purchase your work in finer ceramics or china. The ironstone quality that they produce in China is nasty. The white is a subtle gray and because of this I have had to pass all the beautiful dish etc. items to my disappointment.Just a suggestion, but as a consumer if I’m going to spend my hard earned money , I’d rather spend it once and get a thing of beauty, mass produced I’ve never been a fan.
I encourage you to walk to your own beat, after all Mary, all your art has promoted this from the beginning, listen to your heart.
Comment by cynthia kirby — January 23, 2010 @ 3:41 pm
Mary, I am so disorganized. Please create a line of items that truly have helped you stay organized thru the years. Also, a beginners sewing kit …one that teaches children how to sew basic stitches, buttons, hems, etc. Use your beautiful illustration for REAL sewing instructions that can be seen and learned. I miss like crazy the artist and business women that you shared in your magazine…how they got started, how they run their business, what they do to stay creative (you get the picture). Could you have a segment for this in your blog?
Thanks for caring what we think!!!!

Hi Mary!!
My goal when decorating my home was to have it look like a Mary Engelbreit dollhouse (which by the way I have!!)
I would love to see more home decorating things. I would love Bathroom items (towels, toothbrush holder etc.) wall paper, dishes again, cookie jars, lamps, pillows, rugs, upholstered furniture, bedding…I’m sure you get the idea! When I became a fan years ago you had a small mail order catalog. I remember you having children’s hand painted furniture. That would be AWESOME as well. I would love a pair of ME bar stools for my kitchen! Please don’t stop doing cherries and dogs! Would also love to see kitties!
Thanks for making my life brighter!!

I have made it an annual tradition to buy your calendars for the past several years! Unfortunately, this year I could not bring myself to buy the “environmentalist” one, which was the only full-sized one you seemed to offer. I remember having at least a couple to choose from in the past. I am so sick of having all the “mother nature” stuff crammed down our throats and did not want to look at that all year. It seemed too “politically correct” and not enough “cute” things and quotes like in the previous years. I do my best to recycle and reuse what I can, but I do not need to see it on a calendar.
I love your greeting cards and gift items! I would like to see Christmas ornaments widely available (like maybe through Current, and in stores, etc.). I drive a school bus and it is hard to find bus-related decorative items (esp. the large flat-nosed “transit” style of school buses). I am also a Lumber Cashier and would love to see items designed to honor cashiers. There are so many of us out here!
Some of my favorite designs of yours are: “Bloom Where You’re Planted” and “No Matter Where You Go, There You Are”. My very favorite of your styles is the cherry print! I am always on the lookout for accessories with red cherries on a black background. It would be great if you would make cell phone items with your designs, like “skins” (covers that adhere to the outside of the phone), phone holsters, etc. I once saw pajamas with your design, but they were gone when I went back to buy them. I would like to see more of your designs on clothing! The t-shirts available on your website are usually only offered in one color each (and often undesireable colors).
I would also really appreciate designs using Bible verses or themes. I think they would be very popular, especially those related to family life and other encouraging verses!
Thanks for all you do to make the world a cheerier place!!

Target? Dillards? Where HAVE I been–wait, not shopping from the poopy economy!
I love gardening–I have a couple of plaques that I keep in the yard. I also would love to see kids anything–dolls, clothes, kitchen toys, aprons. They grow up so fast and there’s not much out there that displays pure, wholesome values. Maybe like a ME Book for girls or such. I’d love to see your take on kitchen gear now–I’m not married to the cherries and such, but they sure make me smile. I think I’m attracted to your eye for color, and the stories your art tells. Find things that echo that, and as soon as my greener pastures come along, so will I.

Hi Mary, “Well, goodbye and good riddance to THAT decade” … boy is that the truth for many of us! I have been a ME fan for many years and your artwork has meant so to me, especially in times of trial. Nothing cheers me up, makes me smile and puts joy in my day like your artwork & quotes, no matter what is going on in my life. Your name should have been “Merry”. I have kept your calendars for years to look back through when I need a boost. I am sorry to say I didn’t have the opportunity to subscribe to your magazine but I can tell by the posts that it was well loved. I just can’t understand how something so well loved can no longer be doable. I would subscribe to an online magazine if there is a possibility for such a thing or for something on a disc. I would LOVE to see you publish an inspirational/biography sort of book, how you have coped with your own trials as well as the wonderful stuff, especially with room left for us to jot down our own thoughts throughout the book. I hope you don’t totally leave behind the scotties, cherries, FEF’s….we love them! We will also love whatever you come up with next! Follow your heart and to thine own self be true…we will be with you! My wish list…things affordable for those of us struggling with the economy, I would love to start my day in a ME bathroom so please develop a line that includes shower curtains, rugs, soap dispensers, Not just one design but several… blue/ with snowmen that can be used beyond Christmas, something in spring colors, FEFs for summer, something for autumn and for Christmas. A Christmas village (ceramic houses, etc); ceramic Valentine decorations (my mantle looks naked w/o the Christmas decorations…how about a “cottage village” for other seasons;canvas book bags and totes; kitchen decor items including a rug, spoon rest, S & P shakers; laundry room rug & decorations; clocks (kitchen, bedside, bathroom); garden/porch decor, purses ( I used to carry your makeup bag as a purse and always got compliments); ceramic or stone coasters, drinking glasses with cherries, cloth napkins & placemats; dog sweaters, coats, pet beds & collars; diaper bags; journals with your quotes on stickers to place where we want; stickers for calendars; watches; greeting cards with a matching bookmark that will fit inside the card;anything for a desk (binders, pens & pencils, pencil cups); playing cards; flowerpots & big teacup planters. Hello Mary,
Thanks so much for always putting a smile on my face. At the moment I’m getting a huge kick out of your “If at first you don’t succeed…” illustration of the girl on the ice. Oh how I can relate to that!
So, let’s see…ideas:
***Bring back substantial books related to holidays~ I still constantly refer to your Christmas celebration/decor books published by Oxmoor House (Here Comes Santa Claus, The Best Christmas Ever, etc…). The layout is truly inspiring and useful in those…party ideas, decor and holiday display & gift crafts, interspersed with humor and encouragement (your inspirational art and words), recipes…How about a another big book like that …for Halloween (I mean Halloween IS HUGE)…or Easter/Spring…or for Birthdays or for Kids’ Parties etc.
***good quality flannel or comfy holiday pajamas for babies thru adults. For example, so many of my friends, little ones and family have pets, love pets and I’m always on the look out for whimsically patterned pajamas and slippers for the holidays..you know, like the nick and nora ones I can find at Target? Your illustrations would be stunning… and for children could be packaged with a small stuffed animal that is based on one of your marvelous children’s books ?
***I haven’t met a young child who doesn’t like the board book and matching stuffed animal gift set. I’m trying to make a little mouse now to go with your Merry Little Christmas book for my nephew. I also love Kohls Cares, where they pair a hardback childrens story with a stuffed animal…I snatch those up for gifts when I’m there… they are very well done and it’s nice to think you are supporting a good cause. ***As well as finger puppet/story book combinations. Some of the little toys that were made for the Ann Estelle Tonner doll would be fantastic if designed for babies/toddlers. I think you could run a very successful line of “retro” baby linens and room decor for Target or Pottery Barn.
**** More party decor all-in-one packages..you know, like everything you need to host a baby shower, retirement party, children’s book club get together…I love the all in one paper good-quality cardstock kits you can buy at Target where you punch-out all the decorations (include tabletop displays as well as things to hang from the ceiling and banners), including invitations for Halloween party
and party favor boxes…wish I could remember the brand…
***I like the quality of the childrens clothes at gymboree. I can definitely see a line of “boutiquey” clothes…I mean the patterns and detail on the wool coats and the outfits you create for your characters is stunning and it’s the kind of mix/match thing that Gymboree (esp. for girls) gets into…at the very least I would love some clothing patterns.
***And Christmas, more crafts and high quality decor items for christmas would be great. I’m working on your Santa Says Hello Bucilla felt stocking at the moment… my 5 year old son chose it from all others available online, because he really relates to how you capture the spirit of Christmas in your Santas…whatever magic you’ve got, Mary, my kids think your Santas ~ is the real one… I think it’s the tenderness that melts them.
Oh, I could go on and on but mostly, Mary, I hope you go on and on and on. God bless you and best wishes for a happy new year. ~Stefanie

Mary~
I have adored you since I was a teenager! Now with a home of my own I have filled my kitchen with touches of you (all over the place!). I love the new direction that you are taking in your art…currently on my wishlist is THY Mother print, fall fairies print, and Little Robin. I don’t know. They are classic and clean without being too busy. I seek out your canisters in resale shops and ebay…currently one thing that I would love to see come back is a ceramic Scottie clock. Or some kind of clock that is whimsical yet has clean lines. I desperately need a ME clock for my kitchen
I also fell in love with your newer piece, “When you reach the end of your rope…” I really felt that it was fitting for an awful decade but also spoke of hope. I really liked the oriental flair, too! (I think it was the dragon…)
I used to be a regular at the St. Louis Galleria in your shop until we moved 30 miles south of downtown. Being a native St. Louisan, I have always felt a special connection to you. In fact I have wanted to meet you for as long as I can remember! You are a true inspiration and have inspired me to dream, and dream big. And that’s exactly what I have done!
Take care and I can’t wait to see what is up your creative sleeve!
Comment by Chandra — January 23, 2010 @ 9:21 pm
I also miss your magazine… so, any decorating books you’d like to publish…I’d love to see. DYI stuff and such.
Also… I have one of your stained glass pieces…I think that would go over well. And more tea sets…Your products have a way of making a room bright…I have many of your wares in my kitchen. So just more… do you make brooches? (pins) I bet your artwork would be fun to wear!

Mary You have been in my thoughts and prayers for years. Somehow You have taken Joy and Love and Fun and beauty and creativity to a Higher plain for most of your life.
HUGE Thank you for sharing your lessons and your perspective (I started with “Snap Out Of It!”) about children and families and FUN.
Today I have 4 grand daughters. I can sew well. it would be wonderful to be able to sew Ann Estelle’s clothes. Some of the cards and papers and calendars use what I think are Basic fabrics just arranged in a Bright creative way. Like the other poster, Melinda, above “I would SO love to dress them like her! She is always so cute and coordinated, with such classic, childlike designs and bright beautiful colors.” Maybe a pattern or two for sizes 3-10 or so clothes that would fit real little girls, I’d would also “be over the moon excited”!
hoping you and your family are safe and warm. God Bless you, Joni

Hi Mary,
I would love to see things that can decorate the walls in a bedroom. I have always wanted to do the walls in my daughter’s room. I would love wallpapers and borders with your theme in mind. I don’t know if you already have it but would love to see it.
Thanks for asking for our input, and all my best to you in the new year!
God Bless!

I too Miss your Magazine!! You are soooo right! Do what YOU love, not what others think is going to sell! That’s why I love your artwork so much! It’s not like everyhting else that I see in stores! Be true to yourself, your fans will adore you more for your independance! If your majazine will not be back on the market, I would love to see more books published or at least a quartly mag…you are an inspiration to me, to do what I believe in and not what other’s expect! Come to Arkansas, you’re welcome at my home anytime!!! Lesa O.
Comment by Lesa — January 23, 2010 @ 10:41 pm
I’ve always loved your artwork but it often looses it’s resilience when it transfers to fabric or plastic resin as in your garden stones, etc. An example is the Home, Famiy, Friends print that is too harsh in the fabric. I like the more substantial, full bodied feel and textures that the moda fabrics now offer.
My other favorite artist, besides you, is Jack Vettriano, the Scottish painter. His paintings are my alter ego. They can have a “dark side” to them vs the warm fuzzys I get from your work. I’ve wondered what the outcome of combining your two styles would be. Just wondering…..
Comment by Rachel — January 23, 2010 @ 11:55 pm
Hi, Mary–
I’ve been a fan of yours for so many years–was so delighted when you started your magazine and still miss it! I have many “Mary treasures”–and not nearly as many as I would like to have!
I have a wonderful kitchen towel that I use for only special events in my home–or days that I just need to smile, but the one that I so wish I could replace is the “Mary sayings” purse–I used it for years until it almost fell apart–still have it in my closet as I won’t part with it! I got it at the Mary store at Mall of America many years ago and got compliments on it every day! It was great–and held lots of stuff, too!
I can’t wait to see your things in Target and Michaels stores in Nebraska!
Comment by Pat Madsen — January 24, 2010 @ 1:17 am
My all-time favorite ME product was a birthday calendar you did years ago. It was really long and had one page for each month of the year. It was spiral bound at the top and had the numbers down the side with lines to write names, etc. I would love to see that item make a come-back or a new one in an 8.5″x11″ loose leaf format come out.
Loved your magazine, love your art & the blog. Just keep drawing/painting/creating & my world will be a better one!
Thank you!

Mary,
Your artwork always makes me feel “breiter” inside. I miss the magazine because when it arrived it was like finding happiness in the mailbox. I would like to see you continue to merge your breit colors with inspirational thoughts—we can feel your positive outlook whether the words accompany the canvas or not.
In terms of asking what we would like to see you do . . .I feel as if you just gave us a gift card and now I don’t want to spend it to quickly for fear I didn’t think long enough! I will wait and send thoughts devoted to your request–oh,be careful what you wish for. HOWEVER, since I was just on the website shopping there is one thing I looked for but you do not carry—MECHANICAL PENSILS, with .5 lead. I would love to have a quality mechanical pencil (like pentel) with the happiness of Mary Engelbreit on it–AND possibly a pen to match!! MY planner would be ready for the decade ahead!
I wish you a WONDERFUL 2010 and beyond–FORGE AHEAD!

I would like to say, in this time of recession, money has become tight, and to be able to go into Micheal’s and to splurge and get some cards and die cut pieces for scrap book pages makes me feel truly like The Princess I love your work and it makes me feel so inspired to buy your things. Thank you !!!!
Fan for life!

I have always loved the furniture in your cards. I need an overstuffed chair by my fireplace and would LOVE to be able to buy a chair with a separate slipcover in a design adapted from your cards. I’ve used your fabric to make drapes, table cloths, etc but for upholstery something heavier would be wonderful. There is so little that I like in furniture stores – I refuse to live my life in NEUTRAL and have my house look like a lobby or hotel.
Also, fired tiles would be great -they could be used for kitchen backsplashes, fireplace surrounds,or to frame and hang. I’m dreaming of matte glazed tiles in designs like your Arts and Crafts line. I would LOVE to do my hearth in those.

Hi Mary, I find myself lately shopping for kitchen & household linens online more than in my local stores. Its hard to find nice quality in designs I like. It’s really hard to find kitchen aprons with pockets too (unless you want a solid color). I like the idea of canisters & coasters & teapots too.
Comment by mary Crawford — January 24, 2010 @ 1:33 pm
Dear Miss Mary,
As a long-time fan I understand your desire to follow your own instincts and desires. What would I like to see?
I would LOVE to see a line of ME inspired figurines honoring different professions: Nurses, Teachers, etc.; especially with a vintage theme.
As a Red Cross Disaster Volunteer, I would just love to collect some ME inspired ARC Nurses, Disaster Volunteers, ERV truck (the big feeding vehicles we use in disaster relief)….anything Red Cross. We “Red Crossers” love to collect items that celebrate our rich heritage and compassionate mission. The American Red Cross celebrates 110 years this year! (And, many Nurses collect nursing memorabilia, too!)
Some of our vintage posters, postcards, and magazine covers that depict children (during the 1913-1930’s) almost hint of ME in that wonderful vintage artwork.
Here’s hoping this tickles your creative juices! And, Best Wishes on your endevors!
Your fan,
Michele

There has been a “Chair of Bowlies” print in my mother’s house for as long as I can remember (am now in my late 30’s). I am a life-long ME fan and was dubbed the Princess-of-Quite-A-Lot by my mother.
Please, please keep keep making your teacher/classroom products. I teach middle/high school English. And while some of your classroom options are a bit too young for my pupils, most of it very workable. The one thing I would ask is for continued awareness of the multi-cultural classroom.
I really loved the bracelet charms.
I know it might be more expensive, and I am okay with this, but I would much rather purchase items made in the U.S. and always skip buying things I like when they are made in China (this is a political choice for me).

Mary, my ME blanket and pillows are wearing out. My ME long sleeve shirt is sorely faded. My ME bags are falling apart. I need replacements. I want an ME watch. I need and ME umbrella. I want to browse all the ME gifty items I used to find in my beloved ME store. And since the internet has replaced my ME magazine, why not let it replace my beloved ME store? I want an ME online gift shop FULL of all the items I used to spend hours browsing and looking and buying like a kid at Disney. PLEASE open an online gift shop and fill it up. Fill it all the way up and then some. My husband and family will thank you because it will be a no-brainer as to where to buy a gift for me.

Hi Mary,
I miss your magazine. There is not another one out there that compares. I loved the focus on all the different artists, their homes spaces and studios. It doesn’t have to be the same, it can be progressively 2010 better. Here’s to many more years of your art!

I would like to see more of the tea cups and books at the independent gift shops. Although I enjoy getting the notecards at Michaels I like to choose items displayed shelves rather than dumped in a bin, where they are harder to see.
Keep it up!!! I love ME and FEF!!! The Christmas Decorations were beautiful.

I have always loved your art, you are a gift to the world and like others have said, you seem to put a positive spin on everything and we can all use more positive in our lives.
Mine is a different idea, and maybe you have already thought of, and discarded this, but I know I would absolutely treasure a one-of-a-kind, custom print of my family done by you. You could either sketch the people in person or request photos of the whole family or family members individually, with a little background and maybe favorite hobbies of each person and family pets. With your signature style, that type of artwork would be priceless and I think people would be very willing the pay the price you needed to to produce such an item. Now that would be a dream come true. Who doesn’t like to seem themselves in print?
Comment by Paula DeLano — January 24, 2010 @ 7:49 pm
I agree with Amber!! I love scented candles and they’d be great with ME art!

Hi Mary,
I am really enjoying hearing from you in the blog; what a good idea!
My first thought: my sister is a potter, and any time she evolves her style, it is a bit of a shock to see new things come out of her kiln, but we always come to love the new things as much (or more) than the old. I say hurrah for evolution, and you! Follow your heart!
Suggestions? I started to read the comments but stopped when I read Liz’s comment – “have you ever considered greeting cards?” – which made me laugh aloud. I do so love your greeting cards; they are gifts in and of themselves (I have several in frames to prove that.) I used to love sending out your Christmas cards, but it’s been a long, long time since I’ve seen a box of those. I’d love for you to bring them back!
While I love your art (and your style), I am not crazy about “things”; I think the art deserves to stand on it’s own! So in addition to a couple of prints and the (3) calendars in my home, I treasure the ceramic plaques I own with your art on them. I would love to have actual TILES, so that we could intersperse your art in the backsplash or countertop!
Thank you for the many years of heart warmth and pleasure ~ peace to you and your house!
Comment by KQ — January 24, 2010 @ 9:22 pm
I’m an Art teacher and would love to have pencil/brush holders with your art work on them. I also just purchased your Baby’s First Year Calendar for my soon to be born nephew, so I’d like more baby items made by you. I also liked the idea of furniture inspired by you but it seems that I think you’re doing that. I have always loved the way your cottages lead my mind to childhood memories and would love to see more of those images, which invoke homey, secure feelings that we so need in times like these. The feelings that make you so glad to be home no matter where your home may be. Collectibles of little cottages would be cute.
Comment by Joy Davis — January 24, 2010 @ 11:23 pm
I love the little balloon guy! I think you could keep doing what only you can do best. Be you. My grandkids are just discovering you, my kids grew up reading the magazine right along with me. Some days we were inspired to go through the hard times by the drawings on your calendar. You have made us smile, Mary Engelbreit. We marked down everything from Dr. appointments, school vacations, weddings, graduations, soccer and swim schedules, gift shows, band concerts, funerals, and test schedules as our lives passed by year after year. It was always positive because above it all was your cheery art.
Or…you have years of material for new calendars with your paper dolls alone! I could see a version of all of your dolls with books about each one.
My daughter and I saved all of the paper dolls in your magazines. Since she was young we put them in plastic sleeves and have kept them in a ring binder. She is now keeping them for her daughter’s (she is only three right now) daughter that someday in the future, will probably save them too. Your work is like that. It is timeless and it will be enjoyed forever. A paper doll book with all of the dolls you have made would be nice…Then maybe we would feel better about letting go of the old ones.
How about a collection of silver beads to go with the glass ones mentioned in a previous comment? You will be wonderful doing your workshops! What ever you decide to do it will be appreciated and loved by many. Just be Mary and we will be there!

I always appreciate a wonderful greeting card and when I see one of yours my heart does a little zing! Over the years I have enjoyed many of your items such as- t shirts and sweat shirts, a darling cookie jar and almost every one of your books. I like useful things. A line of paper goods…paper napkins, paper guest towels, recipe cards. Would love to see more recipe cards. And more paper dolls!
More book marks. Things for babies. Cookie cutters. Some sweet glass vintage style ME Christmas ornaments!

I’d love to see some cool scrapbook stuff!! How about some 12×12 papers and fun stickers? Also would LOVE LOVE LOVE traditional Christmas stuff in traditional red and green. Also would love some fun earrings in nickel free metals. I buy lots of stuff from a gift store in Anaconda Montana.

Thank goodness you have listened to yourself! I totally agree with you Mary. Unfortunately, a lot of the little gift shops are closing up due to the economy
Whatever you do, it will be a welcome change. We ALWAYS love what you do!

Been a fan for over 30 years (started finding your stuff while in high school). I too love the desk accessory ideas, anything with teapots, various types of tote bags and purses. I’m a paper crafter so any thing of “Mary-themed” papers, embellishments, stamps would be welcome as would another book of counted cross-stitch design. I think though that anything you come up with will be welcomed by your loyal fans. I too purchase online for “gifty-types” of items….many boutique-type stores are limiting what they carry due to the economy.

Hi Mary,
Sorry to have missed you in Atlanta but I was actually exhibiting there and had no time to go into showrooms to chat and say hello to anyone! As a fellow artist who licenses her art with some of the same companies you work with I tell you I can feel your pain, however I am feeling it at a different end.
When I started licensing my work.. the big box stores like Target were the ones who wanted to do huge collections and well naturally as at the time, why wouldn’t I do it.. I needed money and recognition. funny thing though when I would show my work to smaller companies they said and I quote ” we do not work with those who work with big box stores”, I laughed at this notion as if the smaller stores were the elite and I was white trash !! Imagine the thought!
I told that person who by the way was one of your clients.. that she has no idea but the big box stores are the wave of the future and that she should concern herself more about the art and whom I work with!
Guess what.. the economy tanked and the the ones who survived were the ones who went with the Big Box stores!
While I understand your frustration about the focus groups and such since I wait often to see if my design will make it into the line.. I think that it doesn’t matter where your art goes as long as its accessible to everyone. I recently started an Etsy shop just for that reason.. I feel that if the manufacturers cannot see the value in some of my designs the people would, and they do!
So what is an artist to do when the economy tanks and she has to feed her family – ? Take whatever you can! Beggars can’t be choosers , I have to put food on the table!
My thing always is to just keep plugging along and see where it goes.. and hopefully someday I will get that t.v show and have my characters on many products all over the world! Until then I will just keep doing what I do best!!
I look forward to seeing what you come up with next!!

I’ve been a big fan for a long time. I would like to see more desk items. Right now I have many of your items around my desk. There is one thing I have that I would love to see come back, your drawstring lunch tote. I still have mine and it’s a little worse for wear but I won’t part with it. I miss seeing all your little gift items. Thanks you for asking for our input!

Mary – if we had our feet propped up, watching a re-run of The Graduate, I would be looking at you right now and saying, “I have just one word for you…PLASTICS.” With all due respect to Dustin Hoffman, however, I have THREE words for you – FOLLOW YOUR HEART. You were born with the ability to see and hear what others can’t – so just go with it. Your heart will guide your ability, and if you paint it, the world will come. It made me jump up and SHOUT to read your words about the 23-year-old buyers and the focus groups. As a licensed artist myself, I’m saying amen. So many times, near tears and at the end of my rope, I have identified with and appreciated your self portrait at the artboard, with all the lightning bolts and pixies hanging around for moral support. Just keep blessing us with whatever falls out of the sky and into your heart – and the rest will fall into place. I’m always a fan!

I love your candor, I for one can’t wait to move on too..so maybe you can focus on helping us do just that! the blog is fun and I loved seeing your Christmas decorations. Women of a certain age need to feel understood so aging issues with some humor would be appreciated. I have cancer and I would love to look at things that make me smile. Wry humor is good for the soul, it doen’t always have to be sunshine just some honest understanding.
Have enjoyed you for years, thanks for all that you have given to make things fun and pretty. In the end that really seems to be all that matters.
P.S. since the magazine is missed so dearly, how about an online printable version of favorite parts of it with things that can be saved in a file you create for us?

Oh Mary, Mary – my first and always favorite muse. From the first card I purchased (to send to an ex boyfriend) the one that says, “Im fine. REALLY, I’m fine” which began my love affair of ME art . . . to the coffee cups I have purchased for myself, and that friends have purchased for me, to the posters I framed in my once toddler’s room (then later bethrothed to her teacher), to my beloved tea pot and more – I personally cherish each and every piece.
P.S. On the heels of *trying* to find peace with two serious copyright infringements in as many years in the licensing biz, I am with Deb Kennedy in wanting a real book from a real artist who has been there (is there) to impart words of wisdom on developing a successful licensing program, power and the artist in business (a juxtoposition it seems), and how to control one’s assets when everyone else believes they do!
You are one class act to follow, Mary, and as Beth shares above, FOLLOW YOUR HEART for it is a piece of your heart imbued into each sketch that we are blessed to hold for a little while.
oh so warmly,
Terri Conrad

Oh No! Mary – whatever you do will be loved by your old, new and in between fans. Your work has given so many of us joy, whether it be in the cards or gifts we give or receive, or just in browsing through the website. I have been a fan for 30 yrs. plus and considered leasing a townhouse once solely because the owner was a ME fan and had her kitchen done in cherries! Your design of course. We chatted for the longest time but in the end didn’t do business. I’ve met many people who see some of my items (tote bag for one) and we strike up conversations all about the books, cards, etc. So much of what you put out there for us carries into our houses and comes out from our grandchildren. Mine know I am the queen of the kitchen and even bought something with the saying on it.
As for something new, I would like to see some hinged boxes (unless they are out there and I haven’t seen them – oh my). I teach Sunday School so something along the line of bookmarks with inspirational sayings would be great. Anything you do would be well received. I have so many books, note cards and collectibles but I sure would buy more and continue to give as gifts. Your items are wonderful, 20ten will be good and I know in my heart you will do wonderful things, no matter what you choose to put on the market. Take care and as your Christmas note cards say so properly – BELIEVE.
Fondly,
Belinda M.

I’d love to see some new posters…maybe even large square ones…to go above a bed or on a big wall.
Serving platters and plates would be fun!
I’ll always be a sucker for new cards as well.
Well…to sum it up…I’d love anything! Still feel so lucky to have worked for ME for 3 years! ♥

Just wanted to say that your “Peace of Quiet” piece is one of my favorites– I have a circular magnet of it which just makes me feel better to even look at it, it’s that relaxing! This past decade has been rough on me too– can commiserate with you on that one. I guess that’s why I gravitate towards your pieces that depict either finding time for relaxation or “survivors.” I can’t wait to see what you come up with next. <3

Thank you so much for all these wonderful comments! It is really so helpful to us— my son Will is putting everything into a spreadsheet so we can keep track of everything and decide what we should do first! Not that it’s quite as easy as that, but it certainly helps. Just to make myself clear, when I referred to 23-year-old buyers, I was talking about the buyers for big chain stores, the gate-keepers, the people who decide what the stores are going to carry for any given season, based on reasoning known only to them. Thus my antipathy towards buyers of any age, unless, of course, they decide to buy my stuff! Anyway, I just wanted to make sure you knew I wasn’t referring to my 23-year-old fans, whom I love dearly!
Keep those comments coming, folks— we’re reading every one.

I miss the store! It was the highlight of many trips to St Louis. I would live more kitchen things, linens, decorating for the home.

Clothing for little girls from toddler size to the bigger girl sizes of 8 & 10. Dresses preferably. My daughter loves dresses that she can wear to school. It is so hard to find reasonably priced dresses for girls sized 8 & 10. I know I’m not the only one who doesn’t want to dress their elementary-aged daughter up as a “pop princess.” I want my 6 year-old daughter to dress like a little girl, not a teenager about to enter high school. That’s what I love about your drawings of children, you dress them like children not like miniature adults.

Dear Mary,
All I can say is hear, hear! to all your comments and those of your fans/readers/craftspeople. I’ve been a fan of your work since at least 1994, and I can say there is very little you have done that I haven’t loved. I have had calendars, fabric, chair cushions, playing cards, ornaments, mugs, sewing kits, lunch boxes, and,of course, greeting cards. I love it all and have gifted my friends and family generously with your goodies for years. I saved and cut out most of your paper dolls from the magazine for our youngest grandaughter, who loves them. Please keep that wonderful, creative mind busy and best of luck with the new decade!!!p.s.I heartily agree with the lack of experience and taste of many who are in charge of what we like and are offered today: tight pants and skimpy tops for mature women…come on…sleazy art and cheaply done gifts for the sake of economy..oh dear! I’ll look forward to seeing the fun and good things you come up with(uh,oh…dangling participle) to help us keep a positive view. Thanks so much….

I’ve been a fan of yours from the start of your career, Mary. I think maybe the greeting cards are what I first started collecting, then the calendars, tins and quote books. This Christmas I revisted your book about Christmas called Believe…what a treasure trove of Christmas stories, quotes, traditions and art. I’d be interested in more books by you, especially the ones with quotes, done in whatever style your new artistic endeavors take you.

Mary,
I love all of your things. I especially loved and miss the magazine. I kept every issue. I have several sets of dishes that were by a company Sakura. They are wonderful. I wish you would do more dishware that is usable, yet durable. These are very high quality. I also loved the crock pot and wished and wished for one, however I never received one. I am a teapot collector and have several of yours. I love, love, love them. I have done 2 kitchens completely in ME. People still commit on them. I would also like to see some upholstering material, so I can have that over stuffed chair, ottoman, etc. Good luck and I am so excited you are going back to your roots!

Please put your art at The Calico Cat (they have a website) in Woodlawn, Maryland, and at Greetings and Readings, Hunt Valley, MD.

Mary- I met you in Atlanta… this exact topic came up with lots of us who are licensing when we met for dinner. Too often we’ve allowed ourselves to be dictated to by the manufacturers or followed what was a safer bet for them because we felt we “had to.” I for one have decided this last month or so that it’s better to follow the trend in your heart than the one someone else spotted on tear sheets or Pantone decided on. I’m tickled pink that you are going the same way. Three cheers, big handclaps, all around hurrahs for following yourself. May you find greater and greater success.
Comment by Sharyn Sowell — January 27, 2010 @ 5:39 pm
Mary, you truly are the Queen of Everything.
What a perfect way to find your inspiration after that particularly uninspiring decade!
From the time I signed my first humble little licensing deal in the early 90s I’ve secretly wished that I could ask you, “at what point in your career did you go from drawing what others wanted you to draw to doing what just comes from your heart?” Because what I’ve always seen in your art is that it IS genuinely and 100% YOU, and that’s what makes it special. I think you’ve sort of answered my little fantasy-question in this post (thank you, by the way). I guess I’ve always held you high on some magical pedestal where you produced ONLY what your clever and creative heart desired and were never beholden to underage buyers and fickle focus groups of questionable intellect and taste. The reality is quite jarring to my private little sense of reality and fairness (next you’re going to tell me something difficult about Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny, aren’t you?) but all I can say is that if manufacturers and publishers aren’t going to listen to YOU, the one and only Queen of Everything, and gobs of your wonderful and enthusiastic fans – then (sigh) I don’t know is going to happen to the industry. What comes from that brain of yours is and has always been amazing, and decades of loyal followers, people who are much happier than they would have been without your art, should be proof enough.
Thank you for being real and sharing so honestly, and thank you for being a constant inspiration for the rest of the creative community, and thank you for continuing to make the world a cuter place!
Comment by Beth — January 27, 2010 @ 6:48 pm
You might be making a mistake with the independent gift market. While I adore Mom and Pop stores, in this economy, they are dropping like flies. I think you might be better off with a really good web site store. Cyber shopping is growing by leaps and bounds.
I also think you should concentrate on the child market; i.e. really neat nurseries, for instance. Make vinyl stickers for murals, (wallpaper is making a come back) great fabric for window treatments, quilts and bumpers and that wonderful scottie dog shelf (I still have the clipping I cut out of your magazine a zillion years ago). Furniture along the lines of Maine Cottage would be a natural.
The adult market seems to be dominated right now with clutter free, sophisticated neutrals, which is not exactly your style.
Comment by Gail Jacobson — January 27, 2010 @ 9:17 pm
Hello, Mary! How about some authentic “Mary EngelBeads” for us jewelry makers? Sure, we can make “counterfeits” in your style, but I for one would love to have some official Mary beads. I’m not a scrapper (one expensive hobby at a time!) but I imagine you’ve already entered the embellishment/paper market for that pastime. If not… it’s a thought! And just a suggestion – bump up the quality to what it was years ago (before the current distributor?), and Made in USA, please. Your art deserves the best interpretation, and it’s worth paying a little more if it comes to that.
Comment by Janet — January 28, 2010 @ 4:23 am
I agree with the responder that suggested you write about a book about how to succeed in the creative industry. You have a wealth of experience and insight to share. I know I’d buy it in a heartbeat. I’d also be interested in workshops and teleseminars along this same line. As for art – I love all things ME! I never tire of the joy and optimism your work elicits.

Hi Mary, I’ve been a faithfull fan of yours over the years and
I’ve collected your arts in many different ways. But what I would
really love is some new embroidery cards. And particularly for my
Brother embroidery machine. In the past I did buy them on the Bernina
cards which would also fit my machine or maybe USB sticks ?
I’m also into cricut so maybe some cute paper with your designs on it?
Or a nice cartridge also with your designs on it ? Well that will do it for me
I’m spending my time between the U.S. and the Netherlands and am glad
to hear that your going at it again.

Mary,
My Aunt and I enjoyed your magazine so much. She lived in MS and I in OK. It was something I gave to her each year and while she was fighting breast cancer, it was a bright time to share the ideas and articles over the phone. She saved all her last years to give to me. (She was a saver) I still have them. I just finshed the attitude girls quilt, panel and coordinating fabric, love the bright colors. Look forward to seeing more fabric, maybe not so many flowers. I had to mix in the red and white polka dots. Looking forward to the 2010’s

Mary, you are absolutely correct in having more control over the type of art you create! You know what your own customers want to see, and you also know what is in your heart to create. Thank you for being such an inspiration to so many people. Although my artwork is entirely different than yours, your work has inspired me in so many ways. I always look forward to seeing new designs.

Mary,
When I lived in Massachusetts, I had a corner “reading room” between my kitchen and living room with beautiful french doors. I called it my “ME” room. Many thought that meant “me” but it was ME. The room featured wicker furniture – I had a rug I found at a discount shop with one of your designs on it. I was so lucky that the rug was at the bottom of a pile and nobody found it before me. I had your artwork in frames on the walls. I had your magazines and books on the shelf of a small table by the rocking chair. I had a beautiful porcelain doll that you would love sitting in a corner. I even took your cherry decals (that I bought at your shop in St. Louis) and put them around the bottom of a small black lampshade on a black lamp that sat on the table. I’m in a small house in Virginia now and don’t have my ME room and I miss it – As I think of relocating to Atlanta, I’m looking for a house where my ME room can be restored. I continue to get items to add to the room.
When I attended a conference in St. Louis, I took a bus to get to your store. I was not going to be in St. Louis and miss that opportunity! Yes, I love your artwork and your sense of humor and childlike wonder!
You have added so much to my life! I’d love to see ME stores around the country, like American Girl Place stores that have expanded beyond Chicago. A place where I can purchase a variety of ME products! I once found a gift shop in Ogunquit, Maine that carried many of your products – in fact one room of the shop was dedicated to ME items. I spent more than one day in that shop and took home many items! I’d like to see those types of places throughout the nation! Perhaps three to six to start with workshops once a year at each one and Mary appearing and speaking at those shops.
Those of us who love ME art enjoy your ideas, your approach, and your spirit. Best wishes in 2010!
Janet

What I really, really want is a line of paperdoll greeting cards. I used to get these every birthday (and other holiday) when I was a kid and nobody makes them anymore. Maybe kids today aren’t into paperdolls but there are plenty of aged-children like me who would love to receive and send them.

Hi Mary!
I’m a quilter and would love to see some more of your fabric lines. I would prefer some lovely fresh colors and small overall prints. The black and red lines were super cute, but I am thinking of making baby quilts as gifts. Your sweet patterns on some soft or bright colors would be perfect! Your Christmas decorations would be the colors of my choice.
Thanks for asking!

Hi Mary,
I have really enjoyed reading your post and all of the wonderful comments people have shared.
I must say THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!!!!!
When one defines success in art licensing, your name is at the top of the list. I am not so sure I would be doing what I am if it had not been for the inroads you have made over the years in this business. Back in the day you signed on with a dinnerware company in NY – I was on retainer with that company at that time, and was already familiar with your adorable line of greeting cards. You inspired me to be courageous and go after what I deserved: a royalty for my designs! As it happened, I could not get one from that company so I moved on to bigger and better things and have been licensing my artwork ever since.
It is TRUE you are the QUEEN – I have to say I am so grateful to you.
I think most of us licensing artists assumed if anyone in the industry was being heard by the buyers and manufacturers it would be YOU; we all assumed you would be leading them and they would simply feel lucky to get the ME brand. It seems they need a wakeup call, and be reminded that you are a leader and know what will work for your customers.
Thank you for sharing so openly and honestly about the current state of art licensing. I am sure if anyone can find their way in this business it is YOU! I look forward to seeing all the great new products you and your company will be licensing with the independent gift market in the very near future.
Comment by Sue Zipkin — January 28, 2010 @ 9:47 pm
Well, Mary – You are CORRECT and COURAGEOUS to listen to your great intuition! One suggestion is to keep building on “It’s Never Too Late…” type quotes/thoughts on mugs, stationery, greeting cards, sturdy wall plaques, calendars (tear off day ones, including the above & maybe some craft tips)& the regular type calendars. I suggest you stick with your optimistic, no-limits type quotes & pics. Forget whatever the latest fad might be – originality will continue to make you successful (& keep your loyal fans smiling)! There’s LOTS of us out here in YOUR corner! Looking forward to seeing what’s new!

As an artist myself I understand your need to be yourself and create what you know. I’m sure anything you do will be loved. I love the old fashioned friendliness of all your artwork. I think you’ve touched on just about every area of the home and garden and I love it all. I love the idea books you have published and I hope over time I will actually get a few more of them done. They give me a great satisfaction of having things in your style that I did myself. It is a fun activity away from my serious art. I would love some embroidery to place around and give as gifts. This is something I can do while ralaxing in the family room with family, etc. I sew and love the fabrics. I still have a lot of vintage Daisy Kingdom bunnies, kitties etc and that look is always good. I can never get too much cat art, and yours has such a homey nice feel and I would love more of it on teapots, embroidery, dishes, actually just about anything. So many people I know collect cat items and decorate their homes with it, which surprised me, but I do it and was happy to see I have other friends that do the same. I would love to be able to sew together stuffed animals (especially cats) in your fabics and styles all dressed and embellished with your look. And doll clothes for sweet looking dolls. I’m sure you’ll find plenty of good things to do to expand your talents and line and please so many people who have come to love you and your art over the years. Just keep working, and as a side note, it is difficult to live without the joy of my magazine, I know, but I couldn’t help it.

What a treat to find your blog. I’ve been sewing with your fabric for the last several years and I love your colors and designs. Right now I’m working on one of your panels – the “Garden Girl” (I’m sure you have another name for it). I look forward to anything new from you and I especially appreciate the little girls in your art. I come from a family of six sisters and I have a little girl of my own.
Keep up the great work!

having worked for one of the companies with whom you’ve had a relationship in the past (think embroidery), I can say it’s been a delightful ride you’ve given us. I’ve been in your store, I’ve met you in person and you personify your products. So bring it on Mary, you’ve never disappointed. Your products speak to a large group and that group is pretty darned loyal. I’d love to see home dec stuff.. or tableware. I’d love to see things for the little people (my grandkids)… all IMHO
Comment by marlis — January 29, 2010 @ 12:57 pm
Expanded home goods would be great – tablecloths, sheets, curtains, cannisters, mixer covers, taoster covers, even handle-decorated cooking utensils, lamps, etc. Would love to coordinate my ME cups, teapots, etc. with easily found home decor in your style….

I would love to see more products for children (especially little girls)–such as bedding, clothing, and hair accessories. I would also love to see dolls, tea sets, and pretend dishes using your lovely and cheerful patterns that little girls can actually play with. I’d love more picture frames too.

Mary,
I have been an fan since you were painting used furniture on the side and just selling cards in St. Louis area. ( Yes, girls, you could pick up chair or desk painted by Mary Engelbreit herself for a few bucks when she first got started.)
Mary, YOU might be ready for new things, BUT your die hard fans like me (and there are millions of us out there with $$$$ money to spend) want to see your early works and styles again! The 20’s, 30th inspired looks are what made you and Phil 100s of millions of dollars. i.e. You can still see every manufacturer of fabric and home items selling cherry based items, THEY SELL out FIRST. A untapped market you need to go after is the WESTERN Wear / WESTERN themed market. We horse people LOVE the ONE Western related card you did. WE WANT MORE! ALSO You need to open another retail store in ST. LOUIS too. All of us were very disappointed when there was no notification sent to loyal customers when the Galleria store close, NOR was there not notification when you started selling off your original ART work. Come on Mary, remember us, the people that have supported you from the beginning, your fans, friends and neighbors in ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI!!!! This web site just doesn’t cut it. For all of us that DON”T BUY anything over the WEB, we need a store back in ST. LOUIS!!!!! How about a Store in Kirkwood, or Ellisville, or Chesterfield. It doesn’t have to be in the “Gall-er-ia”, just have it where we can come in, see and touch good QUALITY merchandise and give you honest, Midwestern values feedback. I spent a lot of $$$$ in your store, but not one red cent on this web site.
REMEMBER US Mary!!! You are the Artist, BUT we are YOUR CUSTOMERS!

Ladybugs are big this year. Especially with me. I am expecting my first granddaughter. Her nursery is ladybug themed. My son and his wife are not announcing her name until she is born, so I’m calling her “My Little Ladybug.” It will probably stick. I’d love to find a wall mirror framed in a ladybug. The cheerful ME style lends itself well to nursery decor. Your flower that bloomed where it was planted has branched out into a beautiful tree! Keep branching out and blooming!

Ahhh….so many ideas!
I love that you partnered with Katherines Collection & that is such a fun way to produce quality merch. A few of my other favorite lines are Demdaco – They produce quality product at a great price point. Other manufacturers that I think would partner well with you are Natural Life, Twos Company, & Scout(bungalow).
I also think with your love of vintage a furniture/pottery line would be awesome!

I have had a framed “Life is just a Chair of Bowlies” Card on my wall somewhere since 1975 I think. I love all the ME Stuff I have collected over the years and I say DO DISHES! I would love to own a set of dishes. I currently have teapots, a cakestand, cups & saucers, planters, knickknacks of all kinds and prints on the walls. A day well spent means ME shopping. Thanks, Mary, for your stuff

My creative outlet is with polymer clay and have found that if I don’t follow my heart, it shows in my work. So I believe, if you follow your heart.. you can’t go wrong… when you’re happy, you’re muse is happy and we all benefit from it.
I’m looking forward to any and all of the up and coming creations you have in stored for us.
Have fun.. and as one of your cards say “Shout it out”…

I enjoy the “how to” articles and books reminiscent of the earlier issues of MEHC. There seems to be a growing population with hobbies that are creative such as scrapbooking (including the digital variety), so it would be great to find files with graphics that could be downloaded and manipulated using software to create scrapbook pages and layouts. I enjoy the instructional books for home interior design & style, holiday decor, and craft projects that are usable (e.g. the cake plate from one of the very early MEHC made from wooden candle holders & plates with charms – mine came out great) as opposed to simply decorative. Thank you for inviting input.

Hi Mary, I haved loved your work for years. My husband and children are inspired everyday with your desktop calendar.
Some ideas for you:
Print- gift books are always great- the grad and religious market is always a great niche.
Teachers love using your stuff in the classroom (I did at least), it would be great if you created a few bulletin board sets, letters to use, and sets for educational learning. Your art is joyous and children are drawn to its whimsy and cheerful approach. ( this is also a great way to inspire the next generation of fans!)
A great partnership would be to pair up with Vera Bradley and do an exclusive collaboration- what fun!
I’d like to see some art that breaks out of posters- collage art or shadow boxes ( maybe you have tried this) for college/20 somethings who are looking for great inspirational wall art.
Ok, the last idea has more to do with online exposure- e commerce, teacher sites, a social media community for all your fans (look at these posts!!!). You have a great fan base who are loyal and dedicated, it would be great to offer a space for all to keep up this wonderful tribute and collaborate and share. I would be glad to talk more offline, but teachers would eat up activity books, parents could download e flash cards or coloring book pages… think microtransactions….
Good luck! You are so talented and continue to bring sunshine to many.

Hi! First time to your blog. I received your mag for years and years.
What I would like is…back to basics crafts. You brought back my love of paper dolls. I can see some of your drawings making for great embroidery patterns too. Things that are traditional, with a modern twist make me happy these days. Even coloring with my own colored pencils gives me pleasure…but since I’m a terrible drawer, I’d need your drawings to color in. When I was young I had a huge coloring book with terrific paper and it had victorian dolls for coloring with pencils. I would love that with your designs.
Or…how about little felty doll patterns? Ones that we stuff and sew together and come in a kit? But have your Mary design?
Just the first few ideas that come to my head.

And couchs too….and adorable little tables. I have painted my dining table/chairs red, black, mint and yellow to go with my HOME/FRIENDS/FAMILY/LOVE ME dishes. And painted a “cherry” chair. I’d die for something like Snapfish where I could make my photo album with ME artwork. We just returned from Disney and they have a site for making a photobook with Disney designs. OMG!! You could create posters (I love making posters with vacation pictures), picture borders, cards, calendars, the list is endless.
Also, big with Wallwords! And, iron-on appliques that could be added to baby clothes, jean jackets, purses . . . you get the idea.
Gotta tell you though, I hated to see the magazine go. I started with the first issue (and still have them in my basement). Everything stopped when that magazine came in the mail. SO . . . could you do one magazine (booklet) per season?
Also, aprons, Christmas paper plates and accessories, window stencils. I liked the window wallies you had but needed a left and right, the curtain was only offered on one side. Cant’ wait to see what’s offered in the new decade.

I can’t even begin to tell you how much you have inspired me. I have always appreciated the “niceness” of your work in an increasingly edgy world. I can’t wait to see what you do next.
What would I like to see? Fabric, sewing patterns and childrens’ clothing based off of your illustrations, paper dolls, metal lunch boxes, more childrens’ books, coloring books, housewares (linens, dinnerware…), art supplies geared towards kids (or adults), and child size dishes (a picnic set or an enamel baby set?). Also, I would love limited edition signed prints.

Good for YOU!!!
People are staying in their homes & spending what they can to fix up their home. A little book about how to redo rooms with your special touches & art work … A bit like your original mag. Maybe a partnership with a paint co. Paint is inexpensive & can brighten any room or furniture … YOU know!! Wallpaper maybe …
Anywhoo … Welcome back to yourself – You are an inspiration.
(I just bought my first house & would love some Mary inspired ideas!!)

Oh, Mary, by all means, get back to what you did in the beginning – 25 to 30 years ago when I first saw “Wherever you go there you are.” I fell in love with America’s new Norman Rockwell way back then. I used to delight in discovering you in the small specialty shops and bookstores when I’d travel and I miss that.(Tho’ I sure don’t mind the dollar items at Michaels!) And, I’m still mourning the loss of ME Home Companion. Toward the end, there wasn’t enough of you in it, anyway. ‘Can’t wait to see what happens now!! Welcome back, Mary!!

Mary,
keep up the great work and never never loose those cherries!!! Im looking forward to your new designs.
Comment by Lynne — February 4, 2010 @ 1:12 am
I certainly enjoyed the comments! Some people will be happy to see their wishes have already come true.
I really have loved a lot of your designs over the years and if I could only have one more ME item it would be another watch. I have loved the 5 I have so much. I love all the cherry watchbands and the cute small faced dog watch with the rotating ball, however sadly, that one didn’t run well. Still LOVE IT. More of those would be great.
I’m grateful for all the ME that’s out there, and looking forward to seeing what you have in store. Love the Moda fabrics as well, I’m a huge fan of Moda and participate on their Modabakeshop as a designer.
Thanks for everything, and good luck to you in the 20 tens!

Mary, I applaud you for your most recent decision. I have been a fan of yours from the first moment I laid eyes on your cheery designs. They make me happy and smile just to look at them. I have decorated my cube at work in your designs…..so I would like to have more things for an office environment that can get rid of the “cube look” that is so depressing to look at. Color and beautiful designs in practical pieces for the office. And I would LOVE to have a calendar organizer along the lines of a day-timer, etc. With monthly and weekly formats all in a 3 or 7 ring binder…..not the small version that is out now. It is nice, but it just doesn’t have what I am looking for. I use one of your hat boxes as a monitor stand at my office and everyone comments on it. They love seeing my cube! Yes, even the men who come in!
Thanks Mary for your beautiful and inspiriting and cheerful designs.
How about some with verses from the bible as the quotes? I would love, love, love that—maybe even in the day-timer.
Thanks!

Thanks for soliciting our ideas.
1. Please make the beautiful Christmas cards and ornament available each year…picture of Mary with a very plump baby Jesus. Beautiful words.
2. Please have your artwork for each month on full-sized house decorative flags. Some can be found on line, but not many.
3. Please make your work available on-line. I don’t get out to shop much anymore.
4. Yes, I know what you said about the magazine, but it brought us all much joy…especially with your art on the covers…they were part of my living room decor.
Your artistic gifts are so very much appreciated, and you give us so much…for instance the computer background pages and screensavers. Thanks for these as well.
Cheers!

Mary, We all miss your magazine so much, so how about this—Have you ever considered doing the magazine online? I mean you already have this web site, just take it to the next level. Link from this site and we could all subscribe (pay for it) and view online, print out, etc… Please consider.

Dearest Mary,
I LOVE the idea of your return to the smaller gift-shop venue. I like being able to find your items at Michaels and Target but feel your more specialized items can only be appreciated in those independent shops. It broke my heart when you closed your ME shop in Dallas and when a locally-owned gift shop removed their ‘Mary’ room to expand their scrapbooking supplies. Items I would like to see more of are the clothing items (not t-shirts) for women and children. I was fortunate enough to find some Mary socks at Michaels recently in both adult and children sizes and snatched up every pair. Those nearest and dearest to me know me as the ‘Queen of Everything’, and I am always on the lookout for new QoE items to add to my collection. Also, have you considered upholstery fabric in your wonderful designs? I have a chair I inherited from my Grandmother that would be perfect covered in upholstery-weight Mary’s Mottoes fabric! Whatever you come up with I know I will love and I hope to meet you someday. Keep on creating the ‘cute’ and whimsical artwork that brightens my day!

Tea pots and tea cups and saucers. I miss them!
Comment by Melanie Comito — February 4, 2010 @ 9:31 am
First of all, just keep doing what you’re doing… everything and anything you do is just plain wonderful! I’ve kept every magazine since I started my subscription way back when and now I’m so glad I did! Speaking of something new… how about designing “plastic” (like Corelle or Melmac) dishware… especially for children, but for adults, too? I love this kind of dishware, but I can’t find any with designs that I can relate to, such as Mary Engelbreit designs! Maybe even serving platters, candy or dip dishes, mugs & cereal dishes… the possibilties are endless! Whatever you do, here’s to a ‘breit’, healthy and prosperous new year!
Comment by Mary Riccio — February 4, 2010 @ 9:35 am
Dearest,
Why does it take us so long to trust ourselves?? I am SO there….and SO appreciate your transparency. You have touched my heart, yet again, and shown me I am not the only one thus afflicted!
As for product…I personally do love being able to find your things at Michaels. I am on a limited budget and being able to purchase even little things like Christmas wrapping for a few dollars made my Christmas brighter. My children love being able to purchase Mary products for me less expensively (I won’t let them spend much of their hard earned money on me), and the note cards, are affordable enough that I can treat my friends to Mary cards for our encouragement card writing (we meet once a month). So, while I LOVE getting gift items, home dec, and cards as gifts for special days, I appreciate being able to make less expensive ME items a part of my everyday life!! Thank you so much for making that possible!
Can’t wait to see what you will thrill us with next!
Blessings!

Mary, I love your journals. I use them for diaries, sermon notebooks, prayer records, working on my own writing – I really love them.
Also, I would like to see more home decorating items, like wallpaper and fabric, etc.
I currently have to purchase all your items online from your store, because I cannot find any stores in my area (Swansea, IL, right across the river from you).
Comment by Joetta Witkowski — February 4, 2010 @ 10:25 am
Mary – Your blog is Spot On! I remember when I used to find your creations in clever, lovingly tended gift stores – it was a treasure hunt! My ME items were the unexpected. And while I love being able to pick up some quick ME flair at the traditional store – it just doesn’t feel special. Getting old, is getting old – but the years have a way of giving back our old genuine self without concern of what everybody says – leaving a new reinvigorated confidence – best to you in new decade!

As I write this tears are filling my eyes. My mom has always enjoyed your creativity and products but in recent years I have found myself collecting your things for myself. I have been through some difficult times and have found your cheerful themes and designs very uplifting and encouraging. I was sad to see the magazine go but am anticipating welcome surprises in the future. I do enjoy your products at Michael’s (they make great stocking stuffers). The cherry socks were darling and I would have bought them to wear myself. I wish I could find your fabrics more readily. I have collected your tea cups, tea pots, tins, cards, books, ornaments, fabric, a clock, magazines, I have a print signed by you, a watch, make up bag, stationary, note pads, sticky notes, dish towels, bags, the list goes on. I would never want to see your black and white and red (and other breit colors dissappear-keep some classics available for those who may have missed them) but I always enjoy seeing what you have come up with. I have decorated my sewing room with your theme and my mom calls the room “enchanting”. I make my own ME things like quilts, button bracelets, pincushions, bags, purses, etc. I wanted to make seat covers and a steering wheel cover for my car! I have Christmas decorations “Mary” style for my kitchen copied from an old magazine article that I love. And I decorate my kitchen with Mary whenever I need a boost. Your work always brings a smile to my lips and I thank God for creative people like you!!! I can’t say enough.

Like everyone else, I really miss the magazine. I especially enjoyed reading the articles about artists and articles on interior decorating. Maybe you could feature artists online, with photos, as part of your website. Online magazines are becoming more popular.

I have followed your career for many many years and have always loved your work.
I would like to see a line of furnishing – cubboards, curio cabinets, hutchs and maybe some beautiful beds? How about sheets and towels?
I think it is wonderful that you willing to try new things! Have fun!
Comment by Kathlene — February 4, 2010 @ 12:18 pm
Oh…how I’ve waited to hear this!! Can I tell you how excited I was to see the Xmas items in Michael’s this past season!! I acted like a lunatic!
I’ve been collecting Mary E items for at least a couple decades now, I was fortunate to have some items stashed before I got married and started my family. But I miss and crave the fix I would get by buying and finding Mary E items for my home.
I have dishes and prints, cards I’ve framed, book ends and plates, flatware….and its all mixed with other items so my house doesn’t scream “Mary E!!” But I would love to see more home dec items come back, linens and figurines, magnets and books. I’d love to have items I can keep and treasure and display. More throws, pillows, and rugs – I bought my mom the most gorgeous run w/ a cottage on it and want one too!
I would love to see cards come back and more new Mary E that comes back into my daily life.
I would buy my items from local specialty stores and on-line. Lately, eBay has been my main refuge and Michael’s – I’m always checking to see what they have. I’m so happy just to think more merchandise will be coming and I can hardly wait!
Comment by Julianne M — February 4, 2010 @ 12:32 pm
OK, one other thing…I would love to see more craft items – specially seeing Mary E in the digital world, even on something like Scrapblog. I would love to see you work with a diecutting company, like Quickutz, and make checkerboard, cherry, and anything else wonderful you can dream up. Paper, ribbon, and other great things I’ve seen you incorporate in your much missed magazine!!! Thanks!
Comment by Julianne M — February 4, 2010 @ 12:35 pm
I really love seeing the antiques and tag sale finds that you use to decorate your home with (LOOOOVED seeing your Christmas decorations!). I have a craft booth and find that re-working old things is much more cost-effective than making new. (too bad) And I would love to see more free sewing patterns for oh-so-cute items. Really, so many of the things you have made available are so inspiring! Just keep being true to yourself, and I bet we will like it!

I, too, miss your magazine but have every copy and have reread them many times. They are ensconced in your beautiful magazine holders and surely brighten the corner where they are….right next to many of your books. Just two days ago I received your book, Home Sweet Home, and I see something different every time I go through it. How thrilling to find several items in the photos that I also have….a wall clock, a teapot, a Valentine decoration, etc.
I take many of my old magazines to the recycling center and one day, as I was unloading my bags, I spotted a pile of your magazines in the far corner of this huge dump box. I knew I had to rescue them so went to find the manager, which fortunately, was a woman and together, with the help of a long pole and finally a rake, we laborously pulled them to the edge and carefully hauled them up the side of the box. By that time we were laughing so hard we could hardly function but we saved the magazines and I have shared them with several friends.
Just wanted you to know how far we’ll go to save all things “Mary”. Keep up the good work…I love it all. My nearest Michael’s is two hours away but when I can get there I really load up. A favorite is a small suitcase that says “Snap Out of It”…too cute.

I would love to see your magazine come back, in some form. I miss it terribly, especially the wonderful Artist’s Studios!
Comment by Cindy Cooksey — February 4, 2010 @ 4:27 pm
Hi Mary,
I do miss your magazine – especially the chance to meet many of my favorite artists like Becky Kelly and Joan Walsh Anglund. And I LOVE the peek at artists studios. So books that focus on these subjects would be great.
My favorite ME saying is “TO IMAGINE IS EVERYTHING”. I have it on a ME plaque in my studio.
I think the direction you should go is very different than the past. Though have tons of ME merchandise: teapots, dolls, stuffed animals, stationary items. What I would like to see is items like ME would use to decorate her home. Maybe you could work with Midwest of Cannon Falls. They do a lot of repro stuff from the 1950’s. Sorry but the craftsman/art nouveau did not appeal to me at all. I would buy higher end items – for example I would like a couple of nice clocks for my family room and living room that have a whimsical element but that don’t scream ME. That is the problem for me. I LOVE ME! But now it is confined to my kitchen, which is lots of ME (Recipe for Happiness) or my sewing/quilt studio.
My favorite things to decorate my home with are eclectic/eccentric/whimsical things like Christmas pyramids, old toys, Noah’s Arks – child sewing machines. Things that are subtle conversation pieces and especially things that amuse my grandkids (not toys for them but to make my home seem warmer and more inviting). I look through your books and I see lots of things I would love to have (or something similar).
So Mary – inspire us to find our passion and to imagine. I LOVE “Go Wild” with the fantastic balloon hat. I want one (I want a print – but I also want a balloon hat like that – lol).
I know you have faced many challenges and changes the last several years. I truly hope you are in a good place now. Please know how much comfort your art, your books, your magazine, and the even the ME knick knacks have given me.
Love & Hugs,
Cheree

I have been a “Mary” fan FOREVER and can remember the excitement my daughter had in finding the first ME magazine and subscribing to it for me as a special gift (she was a whopping 20 years old). Every birthday, anniversary, holiday, “just because you are loved”, has been celebrated with a ME gift. My 30th birthday was magically celebrated with Mary gifts, then my 40th and recently, my 50th! I bought my first set of ME dishes from The Bon and the next two sets from the ME store in Atlanta. In fact, I was like a kid in a candy store knowing that I could fly to Atlanta for a conference a day early and shop in the real deal. My heart breaks as I try to find independent stores that carry ME merchandise. Those favorite stores that carried it in the past have sadly gone out of business. I have searched for it on the internet and have not found what I was searching for. Anything you could do to make it more accessible, either through a website (no offense to your website, but there is not much selection there if you are looking for kitchen towels and giftware or cookie jars or my favorite, my 12 settings of silverware….) or catalogs would be much appreciated. I even ordered from the Atlanta store without seeing the items when a good friend’s home burned and I wanted to replace some of her Mary Englebreit treasures.
Tell me where I can find it and I will go there – give me more of the “Recipe for Happiness” kinds of items – the kitchen towels and utensils and mixing bowls. I love the Christmas ornaments and I think I have received every mug that has ever been made, but give me something I can use and proudly say, “this was created by my all time favorite artist, Mary Englebreit”
PS – I have every one of the children’s tea sets and many of the magnetic paperdolls – I love playing with my granddaughters and they know ME from across a crowded room. Did I mention I have made quilts with ME fabrics? Know that I love ME products, but I have always felt an affinity for “Mary” the person because she has always made me feel like she was a real person and I was welcome in her world!

I’d love to see machine embroidery designs available for all formats, nice quality children’s clothes or patterns, and another dollhouse and miniature furniture would be wonderful! I also would like to see retro design items that could work in the kitchen, bathroom, office and bedrooms. I like a clean, contemporary look or the retro 40’s to 50’s look. It would be nice to have an inexpensive set of melamine dishes too. Now that I have two granddaughters, it would be nice to give them ME dolls they could really play with.
I look forward to whatever you come up with!

Mary thank you for sharing your talent with us, it has been such a huge blessing. My “life” is decorated with ME cheer which began oh so many years ago, but I never grow tired of it! It’s fun to read all the things people don’t know you’ve done! I sleep in nightgowns purchased at Mervyn’s (I learned to over buy Ü), I have an ME bath, kitchen, and family room, desk/office accessories, and on and on! I love being able to go to Michael’s and get ME stuff for $1, but I also love the “good” stuff (please make sure it’s quality, somethings we paid big $$$ for didn’t hold up well). I miss your store at Fashion Island NB, CA still! Miss having a ME watch to wear (it broke). Would love to see dishes (in porcelain or something that won’t chip so easy as the canisters do), door matts, plant pots and garden stones again, mail box, bedding, bath towels, and wipe off menu board would be nice. LOVE the primary colors the best! But trust you’ll come up with amazing things as you always have! Abundant Blessings!

Where to begin? – I have enjoyed so many of your products and they always make me smile!
I would love to see tablecloths, address book(s), more wall art, and perhaps some pajamas!
Follow your heart, Mary, you know what it is that makes you happy and so….we will be happy too.
To have your magazine in my home again would be a dream come true; until then, just know how much joy and love you bring to our lives. You are indeed a blessing…….Thank you, Paula

After reading (most of) the letters above, I found quite a few comments that hit my very thoughts and some that I wanted to say..”Where have you been?” Someone obviously is new to ME products and haven’t seen your greeting cards that have been out there for years!! I buy one or more every time I see a different one and also have my favorites that I buy over again.
I miss your magazine too, and have every one since the premier issue, and I never cut anything out of them either.
I have dedicated my guest room with all ME style decor and products. I especially love(d) to see all your decorating ideas and got ideas from all of them over the years, and they helped me put together my ME room. The only thing missing that I’m hoping you’ll create is art/products with strawberries. I do love the cherries, but my spare room is also dedicated to my only sister that I lost 8 yrs ago and she was an avid collector/lover of strawberries. I have since become more of a fan and although I don’t want to overdo the theme, I would love to add something strawberry from Mary Engelbreit to the room. I don’t craft as much as I’d like, working a busy full time job and coming home to a crazy, full house, but I try to find the time, and also use your books for craft projects for my program I work at (I am an Activity Director for an Adult Day program).
I like the cute things that Michael’s carries, but have not seen any at Target, and my fabric store does not carry your line.
There’s one more thing I’ve been looking for for my kitchen: a write on/wipe off memo board in a variety of ME designs. My kitchen is a vintage farmhouse style and I have decorated it with vintage finds from the 30’s and 40’s, and the colors are yellow/gold, orangey reds & greens, with a fruit design and some chickens thrown in here & there. My cabinets are all white or oak finish.
Hope you can come up with some ideas for these…
maybe even a strawberry design for the kitchen/memo board?!
I so wanted to come to the workshops, but couldn’t get the time off, maybe next year.
I’ll keep watching the newsletter for new things! Thanks Mary, and don’t change TOO much!

What a lot of passionate fans you have (& these are just the ones who’ve written in)! Your instincts are correct; back to basics. Meeting you in Orlando gave me that encouragement. Seeing your stuff in Target makes me cry; you were always so ’special,’ so unique. Please don’t be like Thomas Kincade who now is so run-of-the-mill. I’ve treasured my ‘finds’over the years: the checker set, the scottie wall clock, etc. and this year’s desk calendar with the illustrated quotes harkens back to the ‘old’ days…Follow your heart and we will gladly follow you! Lovingly, Betsy

I have loved your art for many years. But times have changed, and as much as we love what used to be, we must face the here and now. I suggest you look at what is selling these days. I would love to see a ME Licensed Cricut Cartridge for the Provocraft diecutting machine. Cricut Cartridges sell like crazy, even in this economy. Go for it!

Mary, hello from the banks of the beautiful Bow. Living in Banff, Canada I am starved for another magazine such as yours. Once a Publisher for the local newspaper I certainly understand the enormous costs relating to the print industry. That said it has been my experience that Quality does sell. How about bringing your magazine back on a quarterly basis? Subscription cost the same, but less expense. Just a thought. Another suggestion might be a monthly subscription via email focusing on how-to related subjects involving fabric, paint, design, art – you name it.
Mary, you are an extremely creative person and I wish you all the best in your future endeavors. Sincerely Sandra
Comment by Sandra Santa Lucia — February 5, 2010 @ 9:09 am
I love the ideas of the dolls and clothes.
I would have as much (or more) fun with them than my granddaughters.
Comment by Colleen — February 5, 2010 @ 1:35 pm
I read each and every one of the comments readers have made. I started my love of all things ME with calenders and greeting cards. Over the years I have acquired ME fabric, candles, soap, tins, journals, magazines, mugs, figurines, and books (there are probably other items that I can’t remember at the moment). Truthfully, there are just so many items a person needs or has room for, and I prefer to buy items I love that are quality made and will last for a long time. Many of the gift stores and card shops that I bought your merchandise from have closed. The items I have seen in Michael’s and Target, mostly in the $1.00 bin, do not interest me because they are not of good quality.
As a sixty-something retiree,I have enjoyed crafts of all sorts since I was a child and finally have the time to work at them. I currently am most interested in sewing home decor, machine and hand embroidery, and quilting. I would love to see some ME designs digitized for sale to home embroiderers, quilt designs, as well as some red work and applique design hand embroidery. I am a retired nursery school teacher and collect children’s books. I would love to see children’s books with ME illustrations.
I echo the comments of some of the writers who encouraged you to do more beach theme and Christmas illustrations. I collect and use teapots and would enjoy some with your illustrations.
Whatever you choose to do in the future, I hope it reflects the things that you are currently finding interesting. I’m sure you don’t want to be trapped in a chair of bowlies forever and many of the people who will encourage you to design items that suit their particular tastes will not actually buy them, nor will anyone else.
I did spring for a ME tin with safety pins inside last week at the checkout counter. I have enough safety pins to build a bridge to Portugal, but I couldn’t bear seeing an ME tin in the “reduced bin.” It is now in my traveling sewing project tote with thread and needles inside so I can take it with me everywhere.
I think the point is, if you are happy designing an item, your fans will buy it, and you will enlarge your market.
Comment by KatieQ — February 5, 2010 @ 3:01 pm
I’d love to see more fabrics – for garments, quilts and home decorating (window covering and upholstery). Some of the early fabrics were very low thread count, so I’d like to see more durable wovens. They don’t have to be all prints — solids in coordinating colors are great too! How about some quilted prints? And some patterns for simple “Mary-er” jackets? let me know if you need anything! I’d love to help!

Mary,
Like most here, I have collected everything ME that I can. My house is full of your artistic whimsy.
I would love more home decor and what about things for the car? Floor mats, seat covers, etc.
Anything you make, I want.
Thanks so much for soliciting our ideas.

Mary,
I guess it’s the Italian in me that loves all your ‘breitly’ colored stuff! I like anything you make and whatever you come up with will be fun! I’ve been a teacher and some of my coteachers have made ME the theme of their classroom. They have taken your pictures and blown them up with a projector and made them into bulletin boards. The children loved them and so did we other teachers. One teacher had a rather unusual, unusable corner in her classroom and so we found some old chairs, painted them red, bot some cheap bowls and filled them with cherries, and guess what the words were on the wall above all this crazy conglomeration?! It was a real conversation piece and it definitely caught people’s attention… another teacher from a different school had done it and had used it as a job chart, which was where I got the idea from. I hope this isn’t violating your copyrights. If it is, I want to hear from you. My sister, my mom, my 2 sis-in-laws and myself all love and appreciate your work. It’s such a breath of fresh air from all the garbage that’s out there… thanks.

Mary,
I just loved your calendar, ” This is the Life”.
I spend several weeks each summer at the beach and always bring a “quilt project” with me. I think the images from the calendar would translate into great fabric and a quilt pattern. My favorite image in the whole calendar is the month of December. The nautical santa would make a fabulous Christmas house flag.
I also like the updated approach you have on the “craftsman/arts and crafts” period of design. It also could be made into a fabric line and quilt pattern.
I wish I only had a fraction of the creative thoughts you have.
Artfully yours,
Gwen

Good Grief! Got a few replies on this didn’t you! How about a deck of playing cards?? I would love that! More push pins for bulletin boards…plastic cherries, a scotty, flower & house for instance. Funny how some people are asking for things you’ve already done. Could the clothes for your 8″ ME doll be more reasonable?…probably not. I scrapbook too & my room is all ME. An Indy fan for years…Jan

Thanks, Mary, for who you are. Your artwork is delightful and I enjoy everything you do. I, personally, would like for you to expand your online store. I have made numerous purchases and especially love your handbags. A couple of my favorites I have purchased twice knowing that the purse would “wear out.” They are great conversation starters as people recognize your designs and want to know where I purchased the decorative handbag. Thanks!!!!

Would love more paperdolls! One of the best parts of Home Companion was the paperdolls — telling my daughter how I loved Betsey McCall and then sharing Ann Estelle with her. I miss the caustic wit delivered by sweet characters — so just “Snap Out of It!” Many hugs —-

Follow your muse, Mary. Life is too short to be distracted by the uninteresting. Since you are asking about hints, how about a line of drawing supplies? Your gift books are always a hit, too.
Keep up your creativity, we all enjoy the ride.

First of all, I REALLY miss the magazine. I have every issue and cherish them. I have been a fan for decades now. I have over a dozen watches, a set of dishes, 6 or 7 of the Robert Tonner dolls, dozens of figurines, teapots, etc. I decorate an entire tree just in ME for Christmas. I like the idea of paper napkins for seasons; I really liked the papertowels you did for Bounty (?) I am a Scottie dog fan (own two and also 2 Westies), so terrier related items are loved. I agree with previous comment – I adored the annual Christmas how-to and recipe books. How about more craft books – quilting and crocheting, maybe. (I have the 2 hardcover X stitch books). How about doing another embroidery card for Bernina!! How about drinking glasses? Frames for eyeglasses (I took one of your “cheater” glasses (with the scotties) and had “real” glasses made out of them! Of course, I love the cards, although I am having a tough time finding individual greeting cards – birthday, Halloween, get well, etc. Used to find them at Barnes & NOble, but the one closest to me (and I live out in the boonies) does not carry very many. I have yet to find any ME at Target. I guess I’m not cruising the aisles closely enough. Michael’s little things make super nothings day gifts and stocking stuffers.
Thanx for the good times, Mary. I have used your things to decorate my house because it is hard to be sad when you surround yourself with ME cheer. And I couldn’t agree more at greeting the new year. 2009 was one of the worst of my life.

I really miss your store!!

BooHoo,no magazine! I’ve wished for it, all the while glad I saved nearly every issue. Now, I’ll get over it, and enjoy everything I DO find. I have purchased and enjoyed many of your “finer” things, but I love the dollar bin too! There was a time that a dollar was all I had to spend. Go where your heart takes you! I’ve never been disappointed. I just want to tag along!

I would love to see some gift books or holiday books,…and what about an on-line magazine? I love your work, Mary. Have loved it since the beginning.

Mary:
My mother (a St. Louis native) my sister and I are all huge fans. Each of us have an element of your art somewhere in our homes, because without you… it’s just not home. I’m excited to hear about you returning to your roots and await anxiously your humorous work. My own suggestions… well I’d LOVE to see anything cupcake related or themed for my sister. I’m a fan of “She who laughs last” and the go wild drawing above suits my style, but please continue to include “seasons” in your artwork from time to time. My mom’s old school and loves your cherries and scotties, but would love to see update versions with maybe a 50’s twist… like the old movie theater lobbies and the “Mary” take on the old “let all go to the lobby” commercials. Congratulations on your success and I sincerely hope for continued success this decade.

Hi Mary,
I love just about anything you do even though I miss the magazine. I was passing them on to some good friends and unfortunately I only have 2 issues left. I have several of your books and I will always keep them. Last year I found a magazine called “Where Women Create” and was pleasantly surprised to see you featured in it.
I enjoy just about anything you do but more ceramic items would be nice. I did buy some things of yours at Micheal’s and I am saving those to give to a co-worker as a gift since she loves cherries. Good luck in all of your future projects. Take care and good luck in your future projects.

I am in the market for a couple of new kitchen rugs and and haven’t been able to find any ME rugs. Do you make them? I’d love to see a half round rug, and a rectangular rug added to your kitchen items! I’ve got lots of ME accessories (the black border with red cherries items) and a rug or two to complement would be perfect!

I sold many of your products in my store for over 11 years. They made my small gift and card shop a destination store for many of my loyal customers. I truly enjoyed their excitement and enthusiasm over finding such an assortment of your unique products. For that reason, every rep carrying anything with your name on it found their way to my shop. Seeing first hand what sold and what did not over all that time, I know the primary attraction was always quality. As many of the comments have noted, your style is unique regardless of the topic. Insuring that your designs are transferred into only select, well made products should be the primary focus.
As also mentioned, I agree that artists who are oversold quickly lose favor and their following. I glad you’re stepping back and reevaluating.
Comment by Lorie — February 10, 2010 @ 4:00 pm
I admired your work before I knew the artist’s name attached with it! Now I have a Mary Englebreit room (since our two grown sons have moved out) that everyone asks about. It’s very Mary and has touches of 50’s childhood items. No grandchildren yet, but I have a stash of ME nursery items I bought years ago that I adored! It was too late for my children but hopefully I’ll be able to set it up in my special room for my special little ones some day.
I would love to see more Christmas cards available. Everyone knows to expect an ME Christmas card from me every year, but they are harder and harder to find. I especially love the ones with Santas on them. I love the detail in their attire! So many of the ME Christmas ornaments are very heavy and are hard to hang on the tree. I have sooooo much in ME Christmas decorations and books already but would love to see a line of Christmas dinnerware to serve my Christmas dinner on! Not over-decorated, but sutble and cute.
I agree that it would be great to see items to decorate the bathroom and bedroom. Like someone already said, my sister and I can spot an ME item a mile away and get so excited. I look forward to spotting more of those items soon!
I’m so sad that I was never able to get to any of the ME Stores. It was a dream of mine! We are planning a summer vacation and that was going to be one of my destinations–find an ME store, now! I probably would have gone crazy stepping into a store FULL of ME things. Thank you Mary for inspiring so many of us with your talent!
Comment by Kim — February 11, 2010 @ 4:26 pm
Dear Mary,
I have some of everything you’ve done, and would love to have some of all you will do! Good for you – follow your heart; YOU are the artist. More of your beautiful books for children; any textiles (more fabric, decorative textiles and wearable art); never forget the teapots & cups; dolls & paper doll sets; things for us artists (accessories for my studio?); rugs; I would love a ME chair!; stationary, cards, and more cards; OH…YOU decide!
One thing I would really love is a teaching book on illustrative art. I have been using you as an example in my classes for years, and would love a teaching aid to help the students understand the process.
Yes, it would be wonderful to find your art in more gift stores, or an entire ME store would be heaven!
I will continue to support you, your art and products whatever you decide.

Mary, whatever you design/make, we buy . . cute never goes out of style! I love Martha Stewart for home decor but not for the “cute stuff” and cute is what makes a house a home and brings a smile! Been a fan of your for many years, since my children were in elementary school, they’re all in college now .. Thanks for all the good memories!

Congrats on the new direction!

Could this be the answer to my prayers? I’ve been haunting ebay to find one of the large crock pots – I LOVE them, the embossed design of the insert was beautiful, but so far I haven’t seen one.
I’m a big Arts and Craft fan as well, love to see some A/C themed pieces.

Dear Mary, I have been an admirer of your art work for decades. I love your whimsey, characters & happy color combinations. I send cards often that you have designed. “Home is in my mother’s eyes.”—my daughter & I have as a snowglobe 7 a poster.
I REALLY miss Anne Estelle, the doll designed by ~ Robert Tonner & all her detailed outfits….I never got to purchase one & now, I cannot find them. I have most, if not all, your books–love them—innocense & simplicity. Your daily calendar thrills me each day….Thanks for asking for comments….Nancy Lee

Mary,
I’m a principal at an elementary school. Our school has your prints hanging throughout the halls. My office is also a colorful and positive place because of your influence and prints. I spent my first years here buying, framing and hanging them to brighten things up! I would love more diverse prints. Our school is very diverse and I’ve stopped hanging prints because I feel like I’m leaving a lot of our kids out. Please help with this. Thanks for sharing your talents!

Hello there Mary and everyone. Yet another Canadian fan here. Toronto, 2009, plastic bags are no longer automatically given with store purchases. You are able to still buy them for about 5 cents each if necessary. No body’s perfect!) Along with Toronto there are a few other cities San Francisco I believe, who have fared quite well without them. It is a little comical when the program was all of a month old at which time for sure there were many of us who were all enthusiastic, buying the .99cent reusable bags from various stores, you know, doing their bit with a big proud grin. We even stayed determined as we patiently learned to always tuck our bags into our purses and pockets instead of flung into the backseat. At the campaign’s beginning there was a lot of mutual guffaw and groaning at the checkout as Oops! many of us realized our faux pas! Yes, I left my bag in the car too. More than once.
I had good intentions though, Really,I swear…
You know what they say..
“21 Days…Make…A…Habit.”
Well, getting back on track how about some ME adorned, reusable grocery totes. Perhaps a regular sized one and a small one to replace the plastic produce bags.
What do you think?

Love, Love, Love your art! It always brings a smile to my face and inspiration to my heart. I would love to see more “crafty” things such as quilts (patterns, material, etc.), cross-stitch kits & books, and even crochet/knitting patterns with the ME designs. Something that would also be a treasure would be paper doll books (I,too, miss Ann Estelle!). Loved these as a child and now I have young nieces who would enjoy this as well.

While I had seen your wonderful work for many years, I truly became a fan as a result of the Tonner Ann Estelle dolls. I have soooooooo many of both the 10 & 18 inch dolls and am so disappointed they are no longer being made. I am certainly not ready to stop collecting your wonderful art ‘come to life’ in these darling dolls I can actually play with, dress, & pose in wonderful scenes. My granddaughters are my ‘doll buddies’ and we all love these wonderful dolls.
I also collect all the wonderful ME items I find at Michael’s and frequently give them as gifts to the ladies in my doll clubs as well as my friends and family. Unfortunately, I rarely get to gift shops, but look forward to seeing what is new each time I go back to Michaels.
I can’t wait to see your new direction and creations, but please don’t completely give up our old favorites.

DOLLS and more dolls! I have 30 of your Ann Estelle dolls, for myself, a collector and for my grandchildren, when they are old enough for them! I’d love to see more 1940’s style outfits for them and maybe even Audrey Ann! I also collect your teapots. My VERY FAVORITE are the CHRISTMAS ones, of which I have four. We love you and your fabulous work. I cannot get enough of it.

I miss walking into my favorite gift shop and entering the “Mary Engelbreit” Room; it’s super to hear you want to go back to the independent gift store market. The thing that I miss most is the kitchen and home items. I always dreamed of a canister set and matching kitchen accessories on my counter. I also collect the books of Mary’s illustrations, and Engelbreit themed craft supplies. I love the paper dolls and think a book of paper dolls would be grand. I love Tonner’s Ann Estelle doll family and still actively collect, dress and play with them.

I love the Ann Estelle line of dolls from Tonner and hope for more and more characters and outfits with your collaboration.
Comment by Annie in WA — February 23, 2010 @ 1:58 pm
I would like to see a line of fabric where the designs are not “ME graphics” like teapots and such, but rather the tiny simple prints that appear on the dresses that the children wear in the ME graphics. There are a lot of seamstresses who enjoy recreating your calendar and poster illustrations for the Tonner dolls, and often it is a real challenge finding fabrics that will work.
That wouldn’t, of course, require your own creative energies. It could be done by a staffer, using your illustrations for reference, licensed under your name, and sold through the venues that market to quilters.
Other than that, I love the children’s picture books and paper dolls. I also have three different sets of your Christmas dishes and serving pieces. Christmas is Mary Englebreit time in my kitchen.

I know from all the comments I’ve read here I must be a late bloomer so-to-speak. I am a 72 yr. old who loves dolls and sewing for them. I understand there will not be any more of the Ann Estelle or friends dolls. I only “met” you because of these dolls and got enchanted with your designs and such. If the doll lovers can’t look forward to more of the Ann Estelle, then my request (and I am sure other sewers as well) would love to see more of your fabric designs in a pattern or size appropriate for the 10″ adorable dolls. I love using Mary Englebreit fabrics for these dolls.
Comment by Corkie Swalm — February 23, 2010 @ 5:43 pm
Please keep the ME Christmas cards coming. I remember purchasing my first truly nice boxed set of Christmas cards and, of course, they were a ME design that came in a lovely box with lid. I’ve kept the box all these years just to enjoy the card and sentiment. I agree with an earlier post that quality cards at Christmastime are getting harder to find. This has been a fun blog to read…

Mary, those of us who love you and love dolls would love to see more of “your dolls” produced. Best wishes on your new ventures. I will echo the request above for more small scale ME prints.Best regards, Margie Robison
