"Grand" Mother's Day Ideas
Mary knows the importance of recognizing grandmothers on Mother’s Day. “Family celebrations are just richer when you bring in more generations,” she says.  “It helps to carry on traditions when families get together.”

She notes how different today’s grandparents are from previous generations. “Women seem so much younger today when they become grandmothers!”  The emotional bonds remain the same, though, because “the relationship [between grandmother and grandchild] is about pure enjoyment.”  She adds that because there isn’t as much of a generational divide between grandparents,

parents and children now, it’s actually easier for families to choose from a variety of activities when they get together.  In light of that, here are Mary’s suggestions for celebrating Mother’s Day with grandmothers:

1. Ask grandma to pick her favorite local restaurant or attraction or another place from her own life she’d like to show you.
2. Have her over for dinner to commemorate the special day.  Whether a fancy spread or a simple barbecue, set the table with some pretty flowers.
3. Help her plant a flower garden.
4. Use scrapbook supplies to make a card or even make some scrapbook pages with favorite memories of your grandmother.
5. Many grandmothers love to teach and would love it if you asked them to teach you about one of their hobbies or how to make special family recipes.
6. If you can’t be with your grandmother on Mother’s Day, even just a phone call would brighten her day, but make sure it’s not collect!

Grandmothers appreciate your time or a small thoughtful gift, not something that’s necessarily worth a lot of money.  Mary’s recently published book, Ain’t Life Grand! A Treasury for Grandmothers (Andrews McMeel Publishing, $12.95) has a little slot in the front cover so people can insert a special picture, and there’s plenty of room to write a note or dedication, making it the perfect small but thoughtful gift.
