3rd Time’s the Charm
June 10, 2010

Here’s a little something you might be interested in. I’m doing a bunch of new Easter/spring cards for Papyrus-Recycled Greetings, which will be available this coming spring. I had the idea for one of them during one of our staff meetings in which we were discussing how many cards we needed to provide QUICKLY to PRG– the operative word here being QUICKLY. Here’s the doodle I did on our agenda:

I thought at first I would do it in flat colors with just markers on colored paper…

But I decided it looked too washed out (although it might be good for a fabric design). So I redid it one more time in the old-fashioned way— pen and ink, markers, and colored pencils.  I like this one the best…

What do you think?

The sun simply warms the whole design and fills the scene with joy and hope and renewal! The owl knows something special is on the way!

I have begun remodeling my house after some difficult years with hurricanes and leaks and mold. The first thing I did was hunt down my Home Companion magazines. I went online to renew my way-too-long delayed return to subscribing and was so sad to find that your magazine wasn’t being published any more. I’ve signed up for newsletters and will enjoy your designs online unitl the sun shines again for your magazine.

Love the sun in “3″. My kids and I call them God Rays instead of sunbeams! I too miss your mag.

Spot on Perfection as always…radiating with bliss and joy!!

    Exactly! So there you are;
    On the money!
P.S. Carolyn Crook is also right; not having your magazine is awful!
    Sincerely, Ellen E.

the third one is sooooo CUTE!! also would be neat on fabric, the softer colored one. I agree
I soooo miss your magazine. It is unfair because there are new ones starting up and can’t compare. I am going to get your 2012 calendar.

The cupcake flowers in your doodle are really cute! You’ll have to find a home for them somewhere. :)

Mary Really miss the magazine. I have every issue. I was surprised though that I never got a notice saying it was ending. It just stopped coming. So sad. I like card number three the best. Give us back a magazine. It was the BEST. Beth Savino

How delightful these are! I too enjoyed seeing the process and the final results. I also like the last rendering of “Spring” the best. Thanks for sharing your incredible talent with us all – we are forever fans!

  10. Judy says:

The last rendering of the “Spring” card is more “you”. Definitely the best one.

  11. Patricia Wylie says:

Love the third one also! Each one is such a great opportunity to see the process you go through to design a card~thanks for sharing it.

I love both the “flatter” one and the one that POPS. Two distinct and different looks; both giving me the same happy SPING feeling. There is a lot to be said for that simple, understated one…

  13. Jan Nickell says:

definitely the 3rd one – it’s the ME style we all know and love!

  14. Sharon Maher says:

I love the new “doodle”! Can’t wait to see it in stores.

  15. Susan says:

Mary, I loved seeing all the versions to get an idea of your creative process. I really loved the 2nd one, but the 3rd one was sooo cute also. Use them both!

  16. Chandra says:

Love it- the second one is so much more stunning for sure- you are wonderful!!!!

  17. when I saw the first design I would have never thought it was yours, then I see the second one, and ahh there is Mary! Although I have been accused many times that I am 3 people since some of my work looks very different from the others. As artists its hard to keep the creativity and love alive if we do not grow and try new things.. and sometimes we also have to learn well, our old way is the right way.

I think a artist who doesn’t try new things has to feel a little stale, its just nature to grow…. I wonder what I will be doing 20 yrs from now?

Oh and by the way I knew you were not dead!! :) ) glad to see someone is fixing that rumor for good!
