I’ve been working on the new 2012 calendar lately– so many great quotes, so little time. One of my favorite parts of getting ready to do a new calendar is looking for the quotes. Of course, the internet makes this much easier, but I still like finding obscure quotation books and finding things that are so old yet still so perfect. And there are lots of new people saying and writing wonderful things, thank goodness. I’ve even illustrated quotes from people like comedian Steven Wright and, in this calendar, actress Jamie Lee Curtis. Here are a couple of the drawings I’ve been working on for this calendar, entitled “Wit and Whimsy” (Now THAT title is all-encompassing and makes it easy to find great quotes!).

If you’re interested, you can get my 2011 wall calendar at your local Barnes & Noble or by clicking here. Here’s the cover:
Do me a favor and post any great quotes that you’d like to share in the comments section. OR you could let us know what you think of the 2012 calendar. OR just say whatever you want, because hey– whatever! We love to hear from you.
~Mary

My daughter and I still savor your 2009 weekly calendar. I was jotting down some of my favorite quotes from it just the other day.
Here’s one I love:
“We must let go of the life we have planned, so as to accept the one that is waiting for us.”
Joseph Campbell
Happy designing!
A merry heart does good like a medicine.
~Psalm 17:22
If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else’s, we’d grab ours back. Author unknown
“If you don’t go to your friends’ funerals, they won’t come to yours.” Yogi Berra
I just put that one in to give you a laugh! Can’t imagine that one making it into an ME calendar!
“I love quiet, clean houses. I often wonder what it would be like to live in one.” Author unknown
“When an old man dies, a library burns to the ground.” an African proverb
Emerson, Ralph Waldo – A hero is no braver than an ordinary man, but he is braver five minutes longer.
Oh, I CANNOT WAIT! Every year, your calendars make my heart go pitter-pat! ♥
your calendars have graced my home for decades, Mary. Thank you.
Here is a great source of wisdom and many repeat-worthy quotes – a new one each day: http://www.gratefulness.org/word/index.htm
Hi ME
Cool quotes from Aristotle, in case they are helpful!

Education is the best provision for old age.
Hope is a waking dream.
I have gained this by philosophy: that I do without being commanded what others do only from fear of the law.
Liars when they speak the truth are not believed.
What is a friend? A single soul dwelling in two bodies
more from the website http://www.famousquotessite.com, hope this is useful! thanks for my favorite card “it’s good to be queen”, because it just is!
My new most favorite quote is the one at the top of this blog from your calendar. It fits my life to perfection right now! Everything I want in the world IS just right outside my comfort zone. Thanks for inspiring us!
Here are two of my favorite quotes -
“If you must be blue, be BRIGHT blue!”
“I love you with all my hearts!” – great one to illustrate with colorful hearts.
Don’t know the origin of them. Love you Mary!
“Creativity is a drug I cannot live without.”
–Cecil B. DeMille
How true!
Please keep doing holidays on your calendars. I have missed them this last year! I have been enjoying your calendars for many years, and look forward to each one!
For many sympathy cards I have penned this daying:
Grief is the purest evidence that we have loved and loved well. -anon
I don’t remember where I read this and failed to write down the person who penned it but love it:
Let happy thoughts multiply like rabbits.
In tough times, people often use the phrase “I’m hanging in there” when asked how things are going. I don’t like the “hanging”. It denotes doing nothing. So I came up with “Pull up your big girl pants and move forward.” I can so see this in an ME way!
The only comment I have is please please design another teapot and cup and saucer set. I am so wanting something with ME flowers and lady buge with a dragon fly mixed in. I love the sets I have!
I love all of your work! I have your dishware, boxes, tins, cookbooks, and of course every year your calendars!
My husband and I have very different “spending” styles…He thinks it’s much better to hang onto money than to spend it. Although, I adhere to the following quote.
“Money is like blood, it needs to circulate!
I don’t know who stated the quote.
ME, Keep doing all of your “magic”
I’ve always liked this:
To a friend’s house
The road is never long
-Danish proverb
“Woemn are like teabags. You don’t know how strong they are until you put them in hot water. –Eleanor Roosevelt
This quote was a needlepoint piece that hung in my mother-in-law’s bedroom. When she died I hoped I could bring it home with me but it wasn’t to be. What it says is what she, Louise Derrick Mitchell Neman, was all about. It’s also pretty much me, too. She was always slightly behind schedule during her life until her later years. I’m the same! “The hurrieder I go, the behinder I get!”
I, too, like Eleanor Roosevelt’s “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” Have to say all these lovely ME fans’ comments and quotes I read above were pretty great!
Love you, Mary! Don’t ever stop being YOU! I think I’ve been a fan since the 1980’s. Well, whenever you started ME. Love the 2012 calendar illustration!
This is a short poem entitled “The Red Wheelbarrow” by William Carlos William. /So much depends upon a red wheel barrow glazed with rain water beside the white chickens./ WCW was a doctor in addition to be being a poet. He wrote this one day as he was visiting a very sick child who wasn’t expected to survive her illness. He looked outside and saw the farm scene and was reminded of the importance to see beauty in the ordinary and to live life in the moment.
Well, I have a saying that I made up myself but it isn’t really appropriate for your calendar:
That which does not kill you makes you funnier!
So what I really wanted to say is that I wish you would do an all dog calendar. There are a ton of great dog quotes out there.
Cheery wave from
your fan Bev
Not sure where this came from but I heard a pastor say it.
“Hurt people hurt people”
I think this is true and helps me understand.
Years ago I was teaching in a teacher education program; I was also a Girl Scout leader, a blood donor, et cetera–and I was trying to promote recycling. I started making banners and posters for my many activities that said:
Recycle yourself: Teach
Recycle yourself: Give Blood
Recycle yourself: Be an Organ Donor
Recycle yourself: Be a Girl Scout Leader
There are so many ways to “recycle yourself”–I am sure that you can think of away to illustrate that!
One of my favourite quotes…
To send a letter is a good way to go somewhere without moving anything but your heart. Phyillis Theroux
The quote I always send my kids off with is… “Be kind and do your best” I don’t know where that is from but it kind of fits every occasion.
I often say to my kids: THE OPPOSITE OF GRATITUDE IS BATTITUDE..Then I explain it means BAD ATTITUDE if they don’t get it!
Mary, this quote from wherever had done much for the anxieties in my family at all stages. This too shall pass (It usually does.
“Life is a banquette and most poor suckers are starving to death” Auntie Mame
I guess this quote is mine and it was born out of sheer frustration: “If I have spent my whole life working my fanny off – why is it still here?”
I love your calendars. I have a page a day as well as a wall calendar. Thanks for sharing your talents.
This quote makes me laugh every time I read it. This is credited to Groucho Marx, “Outside of a dog, a book is man’s best friend. Inside of a dog, it’s too dark too read.”
love all your work-what about all you want is out side the window?
My daughter gave me my first ME desktop calendar for Christmas 2002. She was active duty Navy. Every day I would turn to the new page and email her the saying of the day…. it made our day each and every day. While she has gone to be with the Lord, I continue to get myself a calendar each year, think of her every day and cherish the first joy it brought me, the smile we would receive and share through you. May the Good Lord Bless you and continue to shine on you bringing joy to others. You have such a gift. I especially liked the saying you had on her special day this year which said “There are not shortcuts to anywhere worth going” with a ladder up to the moon. THANK YOU for so many years of happiness and closeness.
