I was working on this drawing (above) when my 12 year old daughter, Mikayla, wandered into the studio. She took one look and rolled her eyes. “Mom”, she said, “you have GOT to stop drawing these creepy looking ladies and those old fashioned clothes. Draw some young girls, in modern clothes from, say, this century. Maybe have them on their phones or doing something a YOUNG PERSON would do.”
Since I had just been wishing I could actually have the dress that I drew on the Queen Of Stress, I was somewhat insulted, but then thought the kid might have a point. And it couldn’t hurt to try to get those young whippersnappers wanting to spend their parents’ money on some Mary Engelbreit swag for themselves, could it? (Is “swag” still a word?) So I drew these 3 hip young things, on their phones, and sure enough, Mikayla and her friends loved them! I also drew an all-over pattern to go with them, of their tiny little dogs, because what girl, no matter what her age, can resist tiny little dogs?? The collection is cleverly called “Girls On Their Phones With Their Tiny Little Dogs”.
We’ll see where they show up– phone cases? Fabric? Makeup bags? But at least I momentarily made my daughter think I was a little bit cool and not a complete lost cause. And as any mother of a 12 year old can tell you, that is no small feat.
But I still want that dress.
~Mary

I think you could mix ……some old…….some more modern. For me? You do not have to add any more cats or dogs. Just me. I <3 M.E. …….always have!! ALWAYS WILL!!
I would love one of those dresses too;-)
Mary, Great idea for an apron front. I might just borrow your title of
Queen of Stress, to put on an apron, for when I am having one of those days. That way I wont let take myself and the stress so personally!
Have a GREAT WEEK. Gosh, let us know what your 12 year old says about the Queen of Stress when she is a wife, mother and keeper of the kingdom! LOL
Yes, I like the tiny dogs. I have a white poodle & a Yorkie. Maybe next you can do something with Yorkies, black poodles, tan poodles, & some other brown & black breeds, maybe on a tan background, maybe with some colorful flower sprigs in places around the dogs. Also, maybe some more multi-ethnic teenage girls including Hispanic.
Love the younger girls and the doggies are so cute!
Can relate to all four but especially love the timeless jeans, ballet top, flats, sleek bob & ME purse!!!
Your children teach you all you need to learn; too bad we are all so old when we ‘get’ this! (55 year old mom of a 13 year old.)
How about drawing an Airedale? Mom of two ‘Dales
Kids always have the best ideas {even though they deliver their requests a little too directly sometimes!}. Love the concept and the ‘modern’ fashionistas!
I loved the Stressed out gal. She reminds me of my daughter & her daughters. So real.
Amazing how ‘smart’ young people are these days. How do we ever manage? Cute drawings, all four of them!!
When will this Stress poster be available???
I like the old and the new. Very nice. The young ladies look chic and carefree. The stress queen reminds me of one of those days…lol
Love those girls!!
I LOVE the little white doggies!!! I would love it as fabric!! I am a bit older than you, Mary but I love the dress too!!
