Mary as a little girl. |
Mary has wanted to be an artist since she was a little girl growing up in St. Louis, Missouri. Her mother made an art studio just for her in her family's hall closet so she could practice whenever she wanted.

By the time she was 11, she told her parents, "When I grow up I want to illustrate children's books." Then, when she was in high school, she sold her drawings at a card shop near her house for 25 cents each. After she graduated from school, she worked with lots of other artists to learn more about the different kinds of jobs an artist can have.

Now that Mary is all grown up, she's doing exactly what she told her parents she would. She draws cards and books and lots of other things all the time. She even has her very own magazine. What a fun job! See how Mary draws.
Mary still lives in St. Louis with her family. When she isn't drawing, she loves to read stories to her granddaughter and go to the park and the zoo with her family. |
